I Thought Mattresses in a Box Were a Scam, Until I Tried the Emma Mattress

Move over, Casper, Allswell, and the like—there's a new kid in town, and her name is Emma. The Emma Mattress that is. This newcomer to the mattress-in-a-box sensation launched in the U.S. back in November 2018. But it has been a hit in France, UK, The Netherlands, Spain and Portugal since its launch in 2015. And, more importantly, it’s changed my life.

Emma arrived just in the nick of time. I was on month nine of sleeping on a previous memory foam mattress—which will remain nameless—and both my partner and I had been complaining for quite some time of backaches, sleeping too hot, and an overall lack of restful sleep. Was it my noisy neighbor? Was it the screeches and squeals from the streets of Brooklyn? Was my partner secretly waking me up at night in order to turn me in to a sleepless zombie? Or was it the mattress?

We had three months to go on the return policy of said previous mattress, so return we did. And then came Emma.

Once I was notified of delivery, the mattress arrived within a week. It was easy to unbox, as it was not jammed into its packaging. It slid right out, I cut off the plastic, and watched it expand like magic. I was heading out for a week-long vacation, so my Emma Mattress was able to fully expand and breathe before I slept on it. This is not required, as the company says that you can sleep on the mattress soon after opening, but I'm stuck in my old-school ways and felt like this was a brilliant idea.

My first impression when sitting down on the edge of my Emma Mattress was that it was softer that I had expected. I'd read about this from other reviewers, and it was true. I like my mattresses on the firmer side, so this soft seat gave me pause, but then I lied down and everything changed. There was magic yet again. Upon lying down, with my body weight distributed over the surface of the mattress, I got that just-right-feeling of firmness. I felt very supported and especially comfortable. I did a few twists and turns just to make sure, and then did the ol' side-sleep position to try and fake my Emma out. But, the feeling held true, and I was eager to give this mattress a go with a full night's sleep.

It has been two weeks now, and both my partner and I have been sleeping much better.

There's just the right amount of firmness to make you feel enveloped—and supported—while sleeping, and the temperature throughout the night is very neutral (no night sweats here, even in mid-July, amid a heat wave!). Emma bills itself as a cooling memory foam mattress that keeps out the heat with its breathable Airgocell® foam. Whatever Airgocell® is, it's working. My body also feels much more rested and relaxed when I wake up, and the achiness I had before has ceased. I think she's a keeper.
