“Thor: Ragnarok” cut a romantic subplot that would have made the movie ~steamy~
If you think there might have been a little somethin’ somethin’ between Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) in Thor: Ragnarok, you’re onto something. Because apparently, a romantic subplot between the two made its way into an early draft of the script by original writers Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost, but was ultimately nixed from the final version.
Now, it might sound like we missed out on something totally delightful — and steamy.
Thor catching feels…again?! And for the ah-mazing Valkyrie, no less! But, the reasons for the edit are pretty wonderful. Basically — explained Eric Pearson, who took over the script after Kyle and Yost — the romance was nixed so Valkyrie could be a fully dimensional, layered character.
“We didn’t want to start from that place,” Pearson told Yahoo Movies. “It was like, Let’s give Valkyrie her own story that connects with Thor…and if it makes sense for them to get together, then great. You’ve got two really good-looking people who can fight and who’d probably be [good together] if the story went there, but it just didn’t.”
Rather, Pearson and co. decided to focus on Valkyrie’s warrior backstory and its effects.
And we really admire the Thor: Ragnarok crew for that.
He continued, “It became more about the mutual respect, and also dealing with her PTSD. She’s someone who’s drowning her sorrows in the bottle, and I just thought that was such a cool thing that you don’t often see in these movies: somebody dealing with extreme guilt and shame in a colorful, Taika Waititi[-directed] hilarious background.”
Now that we’re acquainted with Valkyrie, we’re not opposed to a little romance with Thor down the line. Like, they seemed to have some chemistry, right? (Sorry, Jane!) But first, let’s make that Marvel movie about superheroines happen, k?
Pearson went on to address Valkyrie’s sexuality, as Thompson recently tweeted that her character is bisexual. He said that Valkyrie’s sexuality isn’t made clear in the script. That said, “I defer to Tessa. She’s the actor, a great actress, and in that person’s skin.”
We defer to Tessa too, and would love to see Valkyrie’s sexuality represented in future Marvel films!
