Hold the front page, Vanity Fair’s annual ‘Hollywood Issue’ cover has dropped and it could be the most inspirational ever! Shot by acclaimed photographer Annie Leibovitz, the cover features 13 of the industry’s “fiercest women”. And there isn’t a male in sight.

But the magazine isn’t just making a gender point. With the Oscar race row still rumbling on, they’ve also decided to set an example to Hollywood upping the diversity anti to feature a wide range of races and ages.

Three women of colour - Viola Davis, Lupita Nyong'o and Gugu Mbatha-Raw – all appear, along with four women over the age of 60 – Jane Fonda, Charlotte Rampling, Helen Mirren and Diane Keaton. And quite rightly so!

Also appearing on the cover are Hollywood powerhouses Cate Blanchett and Jennifer Lawrence, along with Rachel Weisz, Brie Larson, Alicia Vikander and Saoirse Ronan, who round up one of the most inspirational line-ups ever.

Could these women be any more impressive? Doubtful! [Photo: Instagram/vanityfair]

It’s the first time since 2001 that the shoot spotlights an all-female cast. Ranging in age from 21 to 78, together the collective have earned 35 Oscar nominations and nine wins!

“Measured by years, awards, or performances, they’re dazzling to behold,” says a magazine summary about the leading women.

And breaking with style tradition, this year’s toast of Tinseltown are all dressed in black. Jessica Diehl, Vanity Fair’s fashion and style director, said: “The dresses on the cover are all black because that lets each actress’s face stand out - faces that are expressive, and in many cases even transformative.”

This year’s cover is more diverse than last year’s issue, which only featured two non-white actors: David Oyelowo and Oscar Isaac. While 2014 featured a record six actors of colour (out of the 12 featured), some issues, such as 2010, failed to feature any.

Releasing the image on Snapchat earlier this week the magazine posed the question “Could these women be any more impressive?”

Unlikely. Let’s hear it for the girls!
