Things to do: 'Tradition Continues' is theme of this year's Carr Center Cake Auction

Get those sweet teeth ready. The 38th annual Carr Center Cake Auction returns, and it's back from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24, and Thursday, April 25, at the Colony Square Mall. The theme for the 2024 auction is "Tradition Continues." Online registration for the auction will be available soon, and those interested can visit www.carrcenter.org for more information. Any questions about participating in the auction as a bidder or entrant should be directed to 740-453-5417 or email info@carrcenter.org. Bids will be taken via phone, text or in person. The event will benefit the Carr Center, which offers numerous program to Muskingum County children and adults living with disabilities. The Colony Square Mall is located at 3575 Maple Ave. in Zanesville.

Herb club

Warmer weather has some of us ready to get things growing. If you want to expand your herb-growing knowledge, visit McDonalds Greenhouse and join its Herb Club. The club will focus on herb gardening and will have supplies, seeds and knowledge to share. Those who participate can leave their plantings at the greenhouse to get an even better start. The group plans to meet monthly through June. McDonald's Greenhouse will provide the supplies, but guests are welcome to bring seeds to share. The club will meet from 6 to 7 p.m. April 25 at the greenhouse. Mcdonald's Greenhouse is located at 1320 Adamsville Road in Zanesville.

Adult prom

Presented by WAGS 4 Kids, dance the night away at the Adult Prom Celebration and help raise money for kids in need. WAGS 4 Kids aids children with disabilities by providing service dogs to families in need. Enjoy an evening full of dancing, live music, prizes and food. The prom is scheduled to run from 5 to 10 p.m. on April 26 at Newton Township Fire Department. Tickets are available for $30 per person or for $50 a couple. Tickets can be purchased by visiting Eventbrite.com. The Newton Fire Department is located at 5490 Maysville Pike in Zanesville.

Amphibian-Palooza

Have a kiddo who is obsessed with all things amphibian? Head to the McGraw Edison Recreation Area for a day full of fun. Guests will join Michelle Illing with the Muskingum Valley Park District and Nicole Hafer-Lipstreu to learn about frogs, toads, newts and more. Come out and explore the vernal pools and waterways of the area and learn about the local ecology. The event will be held rain or shine and guests are encouraged to wear waterproof gear. A limited number of containers and nets will be supplied to aid in the observations, but guests are welcome to bring their own. The day is scheduled to run from 2 to 4 p.m. April 27 at the McGraw Edison Recreation Area located at 6165 Park Lane in Zanesville.

Book festival

Spend an afternoon in Columbus celebrating authors and everything book-related. The 2024 Ohioana Book Festival, an event celebrating authors that began in 2007, will be at Columbus Metropolitan Library’s Main Library, on Saturday. According to the Facebook event page, "Come join your favorite Ohio authors for book signings, panels, children's author and illustrator visits, live podcast sessions, and much more." There is no entrance fee to attend this event. Parking will be available for no charge. A list of attending authors and the titles they will feature can be found by visiting  https://www.ohioana.org.
