Things to do in Kansas City this weekend May 3-5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — No matter what part of the Kansas City area you live in, it looks like there’s a festival, family-friendly activity or sporting event going on this weekend.

Worlds of Fun Opening Day

This is Worlds of Fun’s 51st season. The park will also celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Timber Wolf roller coaster and the 15th anniversary of the Prowler this season. Oceans of Fun will open for the summer on Saturday, May 25.

KCK Taco Trail announces extension, new prizes, and a mascot to be introduced

Current Watch Party

The Current is hosting its very first away match watch party at CPKC Stadium for Houston Dash vs. KC Current. You will be able to watch the match on the big screen and enjoy Cinco de Mayo food and beverage specials.

The watch party starts at noon on Saturday.

Painted Garden

After a long winter, Powell Gardens welcomes Painted Garden. You can celebrate the color spreading across the gardens by admiring the botanical displays, spring blooms, and works of art.

Guadalupe Centers Cinco de Mayo Fiesta

This year’s Fiesta is a three-day-long event. Families can enjoy local and national entertainment, folkloric dancers, kids activities, a petting zoo, vendors, a variety of delicious food, artists, contests and raffles.

Time: 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, 12 to 10 p.m. Saturday, 12 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

NASCAR Cup Series AdventHealth 400 Race

NASCAR returns to Kansas Speedway for a thrilling weekend of racing. Tickets start at $49; kids 12 and under start at $10.

What to know if you’re going to Kansas Speedway this weekend

Kentucky Derby at J. Rieger & Co.

This is an all-inclusive event featuring Derby-inspired bites, J. Rieger & Co. mint juleps, a giant screen to watch the race, live music and a photo booth.

All ticket options include access to the Electric Park Garden Bar, Atrium, and Tasting Room bars from 3 to 6 p.m. General admission tickets are $100.

Tech N9ne with the KC Symphony

Tech N9ne is joining the Kansas City Symphony for a show at the Midland Theatre this weekend. They are preparing for “a night of music unlike any other,” according to posts on social media.

Tickets are available on the Midland Theatre website.

Royals vs Rangers: Star Wars Night

Travel to The K at lightspeed on May 4 and take home a special Jedi Bobby Witt Jr. bobblehead with the purchase of a theme ticket. The first pitch is at 6:10 p.m.

Cinco de Mayo in Westport

On Sunday, Westport will champion the spirit of Cinco de Mayo, featuring Mariachi bands, salsa dancers and mouthwatering salsa tastings to celebrate Mexican culture, cuisine, and heritage. Tickets for the tastings are $10.

The tasting begins at noon and includes Westport Bar & Recreation, Beer Kitchen, Brix, Char Bar, Harpos, Harry’s Bar and Tables, Kelly’s Westport Inn and Taco Naco.

First Fridays in the Crossroads

The Kansas City community comes alive as arts organizations, galleries, studios, and a wide variety of businesses in the district feature local, regional, national, and international artists. There is also a large assortment of food trucks. First Fridays starts at 5 p.m.

Waldo Spring Fling

This is a spring-inspired outdoor festival with fun experiences and new ways to celebrate everything Waldo. The festival is a great way to celebrate Waldo businesses, non-profit businesses and food trucks. The event starts Saturday at 10 a.m. and goes until 5 p.m.

Brookside Art Fair

The 38th Brookside Art Annual is all weekend long and is full of family-friendly activities, local food, and over 170 artists from across the nation for this beloved celebration of art. The art fair is Friday through Sunday on 63rd and Brookside Boulevard, in the historic Brookside Shops.

  • Friday: 5 to 9 p.m.

  • Saturday: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

  • Sunday: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
