Things To Do in California on July 4
Wherever you are in California, there are plenty of Independence Day events and activities. While it’s customary to watch fireworks, this may not appeal to everyone.
If pyrotechnics isn’t your bag, not to worry. The state is large enough to offer a plethora of options that don’t involve them. You can check out these events alone with friends or the family. There are too many cities and towns to include, so a handful are highlighted here.
Here are things to do in California for Independence Day.
Los Angeles
If you’re a fan of classic films, check out a screening of Jaws at the Alamo Drafthouse in downtown Los Angeles. Older people will remember what a splash it made when it first came out in 1975. As campy as it is, it’s still a staple in the film world.
You can also catch a screening of Independence Day at the Melrose Rooftop Theatre. Enjoy the film courtesy of a state of the art screen, put on the wireless headphones provided and kick back on the bean bag seats. For something extra, you can purchase a ticket for $59 per person.
Doors open at 7:30 p.m., so arrive early to secure a good spot.
The Bay Area
If you’re a fan of exploring on foot, San Francisco is a great city to do that. If your idea of celebrating the 4th involves doing nothing in particular, relax in one of the city’s many parks like Golden Gate Park and Dolores Park.
If hours of drinking sounds fun, try a 4th of July Pub Crawl, courtesy of Mayes Oyster House. The first one is on July 1 at 4 p.m. and runs until 8 p.m. There’s also another pub crawl on July 4 with the same hours. You can pick up your pub crawl wristband and the maps showing the participating bars at Mayes.
In Alameda, the USS Hornet is hosting a 4th of July event. This former aircraft carrier is now a museum, and if you’re a fan of military history, you can indulge that here. Take the family for a action-packed day filled with food, music and educational experiences.
If you’re in Oakland, there are so many places to go for a 4th of July meal. For flavorful, vegan soul food, check out Souley Vegan. If you are craving barbecue, then Smokin’ Woods BBQ allows you to dine in and take out.
If you’re based in Sausalito or plan to be, there are many restaurants with outdoor seating.
San Diego
If you’re athletic, sign up for Run and Ride 2023. It takes place on July 4 in the Scripps Ranch area of San Diego. When you’re done running or biking, head to the after party at Hoyt Park, with live bands, a craft beer garden and much more.
If you love Latin music, check out the Salsa and Bachata 4th of July Pool Party at Andaz San Diego. There’s a dance lesson at 1 p.m., great rooftop views and the cover charge at the door is $20.
