There is such a thing as a free Launchpad ... at your library

The only constant in life is change, a philosophy that also holds true for your Abilene Public Library as we continue to offer services that go beyond just books.

We're thrilled to announce our latest addition for youth with the Launchpads digital collection, which debuted this month. This selection of tablets will provide youths with a fun way to learn, using technology with which they’re familiar. Sixty titles were purchased as a pilot collection, and each branch will house 20 Launchpads.

Even better, no two are alike; each tablet will offer something different for youths to learn.

Launchpads now are available at the Abilene Public LIbrary.

Many of our patrons have been exposed to these Playaway products in the past. The south branch Library had a small collection of audiobooks that were pre-loaded onto a device you could check out and listen to with headphones. There was no need for a CD player or outside equipment to hear the audiobook, and it was popular.

Next, we added a collection of Wonderbooks for youths. A growing collection to this day, these children’s books provide a print book that includes an audio component inside that’s ready to play. So, kids could read the book themselves or switch it to the learning mode for literacy learning and fun.

Launchpads is yet another product from Playaway, and the next collection we offer to your kids. These new tools offer a tablet pre-loaded with curated collections of learning apps, videos, games, stories and more that are tailored specifically for various age groups. Even better, there’s no need to download any content or connect to Wi-Fi. As long as it has been charged, you're ready to get started.

Launchpads are also are constructed to make them less likely to break with durable protective bumpers, seven-inch, high-definition touch screens and the ability to listen with its external speaker or with headphones through an audio jack.

Let’s take a closer look at one of the titles offered.

One of the 60 Launchpads available had a picture of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle on the front of the case. This title is part of the Healthy Living Module and designed for ages 3+. When a child begins using it, he or she can create an avatar to represent themselves in their digital journey. Then, they’ll dive into a series of apps, storybooks and videos to help them build positive habits by covering topics including hygiene, nutrition, exercise, and environmental awareness.

All of which is covered through 12 activities youths can work their way through, including “Princess Exercise for Kids,” “Anna Goes to the Supermarket,” “My Body" and “The What You Eat Song."

Remember, no two tablets are alike, so after checking out one, look for more if your child enjoyed their first experience. Studies show that learning apps have a powerful impact on development and education. They increase a child’s motivation to learn and be engaged with learning by 98%, increase math efficiency by 66%, reading efficiency by 40% and science test scores by 29%.

What parent wouldn’t be thrilled with results such as that?

Look for the new Launchpads on your next visit and check out one. They’re only available to be checked out with a valid adult library card and we’re limiting one Launchpad checkout per library card. Additionally, you may renew them one time, as long as there are no holds. Instructions on how to use it will be found inside the case, but you’ll see kids will take to them easily.

Take advantage of this new collection we have to offer, and if popular, perhaps we can look at adding more as Launchpads are available not only for youths, but teens and adults, too.

Take off with Launchpads at your library.
