A 42-year-old father and his 20-year-old daughter have been arrested after having a baby together.

Steven Walter Pladl and his biological daughter Katie Rose Pladl, 20, were arrested last week at their home in North Carolina and charged with incest.

Katie Rose, who was given up for adoption at birth, spent years searching for her biological parents. She finally reconnected with them via social media when she was 18.

Documents show that Katie Rose moved in with the couple and their two other children in August 2016; Pladl and his wife legally separated in November 2016.

According to warrants obtained by KRON4, Pladl’s estranged wife reported him after he had impregnated their daughter. She found out after reading a journal belonging to one of the other children. She confronted Pladl, who allegedly admitted the baby was his. He said the couple planned to marry.

The baby was born in September 2017, and the warrants were issued in November. The father and daughter were held in the Wake County Detention Center. Pladl has posted bond, but Katie Rose remains behind bars.

Although incest is a crime, dozens of such cases have been reported nationwide. The phenomenon, called “genetic sexual attraction,” it is defined by the Oxford Dictionary of Psychology as “erotic feelings between close relatives, often between siblings or between parents and children, who are separated early in life and reunited in adolescence or adulthood.”
