Almost 30 years after The Joy Luck Club debuted, Amy Tan is returning to the group of Chinese and Chinese-American women for another look, and a story centering an entirely new generation.

Based on Tan's 1989 novel of the same name, The Joy Luck Club became a success with both critics and audiences when it hit screens in 1993 with a multigenerational tale of Asian American mothers and daughters navigating their histories, culture, and complicated interpersonal connections. The film, directed by Wayne Wang, was considered groundbreaking for its portrayal of the female immigrant and first-generation American experience, as well as for bringing a number of actresses of East Asian descent—the film starred Tsai Chin, Ming-Na Wen, Lisa Lu, Rosalind Chao, and Kieu Chinh, among others—into the spotlight.

Per Variety, the new film will be written by Tan and screenwriter Ron Bass (Rainman), and will be produced by Tan, Bass, Priya Amritraj, Jeff Kleeman, and Hyde Park Entertainment Group. Reportedly, the sequel would focus on the evolution of the generations of the families from the first film, with the mothers from the original becoming grandmothers, and the daughters from the first film now in the role of mothers. The original cast is said to be in talks to return to the roles that they originated, but no official casting announcements have been made yet.

“Now more than ever it is important to share authentic stories about the Asian American experience, and we believe this film will speak to wide audiences with its narrative rooted in humanity and connection,” Ashok Amritraj of Hyde Park Entertainment Group said in a statement.

Tan and Bass concurred, saying, “We are excited to be teaming with Hyde Park and Jeff Kleeman in bringing to life the next generation of these four families so close to our hearts.”
