From Town & Country

Audrey Hepburn’s legacy is forever immortalized, but the film and fashion icon’s life is being revisited once more with a new documentary, set to premiere later this year. Audrey, directed by Helena Coan and created by the team behind McQueen, will recount the Breakfast at Tiffany’s star's life from her early childhood onward. Painting an intimate portrait of Hepburn's upbringing in the Netherlands, to her rise to fame in Hollywood and later work with UNICEF, Coan offers an honest portrayal of Hepburn’s hardships both in and out of the spotlight. Below, everything you need to know about the forthcoming film.

Audrey Is Directed By Helena Coan.

London-based director, writer, and musician Helena Coan has worked on other documentary films prior to Audrey, including Chasing Perfect, a retrospective of American automobile designer Frank Stephenson's work and life. Coan is also currently filming Lioness: The Nicola Adams Story, about undefeated female boxing champion Nicola Adams, which is set to debut in 2021.

The documentary will include interviews with Audrey Hepburn's son, Sean Hepburn Ferrer, and former Givenchy Artistic Director, Clare Waight Keller.

Helena Coan compiles a series of interviews for the film, speaking with Hepburn's son, film producer Sean Hepburn Ferrer, who touches upon his mother's difficult childhood, plagued with malnutrition, loss, and post-war life in Holland. She also talks to Clare Waight Keller, formerly of Givenchy, about Hepburn's professional and personal relationship with the fashion house's founder, Hubert de Givenchy. Hepburn forged a strong bond with de Givenchy in the 1950s, later serving as his muse and wearing his designs for many of her most iconic roles.

Coan partnered with the Royal Ballet’s Wayne McGregor.

“My dream was to be a ballet dancer, but I plunged into show business,” Hepburn says in the trailer for the documentary. The actress’s love of ballet was at times apparent in her acting career, like when she danced alongside Fred Astaire in 1957's Funny Face. While Hepburn’s aspirations to be a ballerina were cut short after the Nazi’s invaded the Netherlands during World War II, Coan pays homage to her passion for dance throughout the documentary. The director tapped the Royal Ballet’s Wayne McGregor to choreograph a series of dances to depict different stages of Hepburn’s life. Dancer Keira Moore is said to portray ‘Young Audrey,’ while Francesca Hayward plays ‘Hollywood era Audrey.’

This isn’t the first Audrey Hepburn documentary.

Several documentaries have been made about Audrey Hepburn in years past, including Audrey Hepburn Remembered and Audrey Hepburn: In Her Own Words, which both came out on the year of her death. This documentary is said to uncover sides of Hepburn we are less acquainted with, however, including her difficult upbringing after her father left her family, which led to relationship challenges that lasted throughout her lifetime.

Audrey will be available on DVD and digital download starting November 30.

The platform for digital download has yet to be disclosed.
