There's a New Cinderella Adaptation on the Horizon

Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo, have we got news for you! There have been so many great Cinderella movies over the years—the early Disney animated classic; the 1997 live-action made-for-TV musical starring Brandy, Whitney Houston, Bernadette Peters, and Whoopi Goldberg; the 1998 film Ever After; the 2015 live-action version starring Lily James—and now it’s time to make room for another one in our hearts and on our screens because a new Cinderella is coming to movie theaters in 2021.

This Cinderella is being shepherded to the screen by Sony, and it’s written and directed by Kay Cannon, who is best known for writing the Pitch Perfect movies. Talk show host James Corden is producing. The casting, both confirmed and rumored, is exciting. Pop star Camila Cabello, who is known for such recent songs as “Señorita” and “Havana,” is set to play Cinderella. The incomparable Billy Porter (Kinky Boots, Pose), of Broadway and red carpet fame, will be the Fairy Godmother.

According to Deadline, the rest of the cast includes Pierce Brosnan (The World Is Not Enough, Mamma Mia), Minnie Driver (Good Will Hunting, The Phantom of the Opera), Grammy Award-winning musician Missy Elliot, James Corden (Into the Woods, The History Boys), and comedians Romesh Ranganathan (It’s Not Rocket Science, A League of Their Own), and John Mulaney (Big Mouth, John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch). The cast also includes Charlotte Spencer (Les Misérables), Maddie Baillio (Hairspray Live), and Nicholas Galitzine (Chambers). It’s also rumored that Idina Menzel (Frozen, Rent) will play the evil stepmother.

Stay tuned for more information, casting and production news, and an eventual release date. In the meantime, we’ll be watching the 1997 Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella again—it has one of the best casts ever assembled on film. In the meantime, queue up these movies and enjoy!
