I know we all spend a ton of time thinking about the British royal family, but it’s not like they’re the only royals on the block. Oh no, sir, there’s a whole world full of royals and they’re getting into all kinds of shenanigans just like their Brit counterparts. Take, for example, the massive amount of drama surrounding former Prince Nicolae of Romania and the lovechild he confirmed fathering via a Facebook statement earlier this week. Seriously, this royal scandal is so juicy you need to know everything about it right now!

Okay so here’s the deal: Nicholas Medforth-Mills, formerly known as Prince Nicolae of Romania before his grandfather revoked his title (more on that later), has been married to Romanian journalist Alina Binder since 2017. But, in a Facebook statement posted on Monday, May 27, he admitted that he fathered a child with a woman who is not his wife. That woman is a former flame, Nicoleta Cirjan, and according to People magazine’s report, she and Nicholas have been in previous disputes over the paternity of Cirjan’s three-year-old daughter.

In a statement translated from Romanian, Nicholas acknowledges that he is the father of Cirjan’s child and that a paternity test confirmed it: “As a result of my insistence on the test of establishing the paternity of my alleged child, Ms. Nicoleta Cîrjan accepted the realization. The result was positive, thinking I was her child’s father. Given the context in which this child came to the world, the fact that I did not have a relationship with my mother, I assumed legal responsibility for it.”

He continued, “For reasons of protecting the best interests of the child, I consider that any aspect of her life is of a strictly private nature. From the express desire to protect the child and not subject it to any media risk or bullying, I decided to stop any further comments on this subject.”

Neither Binder nor Cirjan appears to have released their own statements about this turn of events. Nicholas and Binder do not have children at this time but from the sound of his statement, it would seem his child with Cirjan will not be a part of his daily life.

Now, remember how I mentioned Nicholas was the former Prince of Romania? Well, apparently his royal title was revoked by his grandfather, King Michael I of Romania. Although the Romanian monarchy is basically defunct with Michael serving as the last king in the nation’s history, Nicholas could have retained his royal title and continued to do work related to the royal family throughout his life. That all changed in 2015 when Michael revoked Nicholas’ title, essentially ousting him the royal family, because of these paternity allegations; the scandal was just too much for the Romanian crown.

Nicholas released a statement at the time, attempting to put on a strong front as he shared with the world he no longer had a royal title: “On August 1, 2015, His Majesty King Michael I, my grandfather, took the decision to withdraw my Prince of Romania title and place in the Succession Line at the Crown of Romania. This decision, which I assume, comes from a time when I reflected on the future of our country and our home, as well as on the role that I can have in their advancement. The position of the Prince of Romania and the presence in the Succession Line at the Crown of Romania impose a way to lead my life, which I find it difficult to accept. That is why, with much pain in my soul, I believe that the decision of His Majesty the King is welcome for me. I will seek in the future to serve my ideals and principles in a different way.”
