Then & Now: Do you know where this is?
Before a click of a button did the trick, sending mail typically involved a trip to the post office. It was an arduous task, some might quip, requiring the combination of a stamp, an envelope and at least three lines of detail on the destination.
To make life easier, in the pre-email days, many communities had neighborhood post offices. These branches, some with their own ZIP code, were convenient for customers and letter carriers — dating to the days when walking was a preferred mode.
The post office branch pictured in this week's Then photo, from July 1966, was in operation until mid-2000.
Before the building was converted into a post office, it was home to a laundry business. At the time, the post office was looking for a bigger building, one that could replace its tight quarters a short distance away.
We acknowledge that this week's Then & Now might be easier than most, with wording on the facade providing a few clues. But can you pinpoint the location?
In 2000, the branch pictured here moved to a new building a few blocks down the road.
Meantime, the old post office has been home to a beauty shop for many years.
