The Surprisingly Fun Plank Exercise You Need to Try Today

If you find yourself constantly checking your watch as you hold a plank, it’s time for a core exercise upgrade. The moving plank is a more challenging (and more fun!) variation of a regular straight-arm plank.

“The plank is a great core exercise, but adding a little bit of movement is going to challenge your stability, your balance, and your core strength,” says fitness expert Brett Hoebel, creator of the 20-Minute Body and trainer on season 11 of The Biggest Loser.

Here’s how to do it: Start on all fours with your toes on the floor, hands under your shoulders with arms straight. Your body should be in a straight line from your head to your heels. This is your basic plank position. For the moving plank: Pick up your left foot and step out to your right side. At the same time, pick up your right hand, cross your left arm, and set your palm back down on the floor (your arms will form an X). Then, step with the opposite arm and leg to the right to return to the basic plank position.

After eight to 12 steps in one direction, reverse the movement to head in the other direction. Watch the video above to see Hoebel demonstrate the moving plank and show you how to make exercise easier or more difficult, depending on your fitness level.
