When you know, you know. And that was the case with Dakota Johnson’s gold Gucci frock at the 2017 Oscars.

“It was always that dress. It was already being made and we knew the color. We had time to do research,” Johnson’s longtime hairstylist, Mark Townsend, tells Yahoo Beauty.

He worked closely with stylist Kate Young. “We were sending inspiration pictures back and forth. I was really inspired by Martha Plimpton when she wore that amazing silver-satin dress.”

In this age of 20-somethings with caked-on makeup, shellacked hair, and clothes that age them, Johnson looks “age-appropriate. She looks so fresh and natural,” says Townsend.

Johnson doesn’t like products in her hair, so Townsend keeps things light when working with her.

He applied Dove curls-defining mousse, which retails for $5.79, for volume, and used Oribe Royal Blowout spray for added shine. Once her hair was dry, he used his ghd iron to smooth it out. And to go totally ’90s, he twisted her hair into a knot and secured it with scunci bobby pins. He finished by spraying Dove Extra Hold Hairspray all over the top of her hair.

From start to finish, the entire glam process takes two hours. “There’s no minutiae when you’re working with Dakota. She and I know each other so well now. She’s so much more self-confident,” says Townsend. “It’s so refreshing to see an effortless beauty. It does take effort to look that effortless.”
