It’s a Thanksgiving tradition as time-tested (and nearly as sad) as watching the Detroit Lions get blown out and pretending you actually like your aunt’s yam recipe.

You are all set to start carving the turkey when you remember with a surge of Thanksgiving terror — rivaled only by spending dinner seated next to your oddball uncle — that you have run out of that special, must-have secret spice. Or maybe you've taken your perfectly golden pies out of the oven only to realize you’ve forgotten to stock up on that most make-or-break of accoutrements: Cool Whip.

“Nooooo!” you internally scream. “Why did it have to be the Cool Whip?" (And why couldn’t it have been the darn yams?)

But while such a scenario may have once spelled certain Turkey Day disaster, the glut of Coachella Valley grocery stores planning that stay open for at least a little while on the big day now it make it nothing more than a speed bump on your way to Thanksgiving glory, or at least a food coma.

Whether you need potatoes, beer or just a warm, welcoming place to escape your in-laws, here’s our 2023 guide to which stores will be open — and when — to serve desperate last-minute shoppers like, well, us.

So, fear not your annual grocery stop (or two or three). Just don’t ask us where to score a last-minute turkey. There’s some Thanksgiving problems that even your trusty neighborhood Desert Sun reporter can’t solve.
