Palisades Tahoe, CA has hosted World Cup races in back-to-back years, but the 'Golden Saucer' trophy still remains the most coveted prize in the valley.
The Annual 'Pain McShlonkey' snowblade race, in honor of the late Shane McConkey, went down on March 23rd, 2024. Tap to watch the video below of local pro Ryan Faye, and legend Wendy Fisher, stake their claims as the best skiers on the mountain.
A spring storm dumped over a foot of fresh on Palisades the night before the race, and as you can tell by the multiple tomahawk wipeouts, it played a part in the results.
The deep snow didn't seem to matter for Ryan Faye, however. He pointed his blades straight, leaned slightly back, and bombed the hill to claim his first ever Golden Saucer. To read more about Faye's impressive weekend, check out Ian Greenwood's interview for POWDER by clicking here.
On the women's side, Wendy Fisher returned to Palisades to reclaim her Golden Saucer trophy for the fourth time. Is her run of victories officially a dynasty? People are asking....
Slower-than-normal traffic that morning, and a very mild hangover, caused me to miss the majority of the race (something I still haven't forgiven myself for), but I enjoyed watching the contestants bomb down Exhibition as I pulled into the parking lot.
It was hard to make out each skier from that distance, but Donny Pelletier's signature orange construction helmet stuck out like a beacon in the night. I eventually passed by him in the village with a less-than-enthusiastic look on his face.
I asked prior to knowing the results, "Donny! Did you win again?" (Donny won the PMS in 2023). He replied with a slightly-disappointed grin on his face, "Not this year, Bub!".

The rest of my day was spent skiing powder, laughing at the ridiculous PMS costumes, and living it up at The Slot Bar with a cast of skiing heroes and locals alike.
If you've ever considered visiting Palisades for PMS, or want to race in the event, I highly encourage you to do so. It's one of the most fun days you can have at a ski resort, period.
