Nature-focused adventures are nothing new at Matagorda Bay Nature Park on the Texas coast. But now, once you’re done kayaking through the wetlands, you can retire to one of the property’s brand-new beach bungalows. The bungalows, which are available to reserve for stays starting in July, are perched on concrete pillars that give guests elevated views of the water.

Each of the 10 bungalows comes equipped with a full kitchen, gas grill, and a spacious, private deck that beckons you to sit back and enjoy the coastal views. There are two bungalow floor plans — one that can sleep six and one that accommodates up to eight people.

The living room and deck provide ample gathering space, while the bedrooms and bathrooms offer privacy. The bungalows — the highest-tier lodging option at Matagorda Bay Nature Park — come equipped with fresh linens and beach towels. Some units are ADA-accessible.

When you’re not lounging on your private deck with family and friends, there’s plenty to do. Matagorda Bay Nature Park sits where the mouth of the Colorado River feeds into the Gulf of Mexico, creating a unique ecosystem and plenty of on- and off-water activities. A long boat ramp leads out over the marshes and wetlands to the water. There are kayak rentals, fishing, minigolf, and “field trips" that introduce kids of all ages to the unique wetland ecosystem found within the park. Matagorda Bay Nature Park is also one of the country’s top-ranked birdwatching destinations, with over 370 species sighted and counting.

Those who’d rather kick back and relax on the sandy shore can rent beach chairs and umbrellas, or go beachcombing with a rented wagon. As the park proudly notes on its website, “The outdoors are open.”

Matagorda Bay Nature Park’s bungalows are the resort’s newest lodging option, but the park has long welcomed RV travelers. There are over 50 RV-friendly camping spots, most with full hookups and some set right on the waterfront. Four Airstream campers are also available to rent. Each is outfitted with heat and A/C and a private kitchen, grill, shower, and bathroom.

Matagorda Bay Nature Park is found in Matagorda, Texas, less than two hours by car from Houston. San Antonio and Austin are around three hours from Matagorda by car and Corpus Christi is about 2.5 hours to the south.
