Texas Great Pyrenees Shelter Dog Adopts Abandoned Newborn Puppies

Caring for abandoned puppies is a huge undertaking. Puppies need to be kept warm because puppies can't regulate their own body temperature, fed special formula around the clock, and watched closely to make sure they aren't in any signs of distress. It's basically a job best left to a mama dog.

But sometimes, sadly, there is no mama dog present, which was the case at an animal shelter in Fort Bend.

The article explains that a litter of six puppies was brought into the Fort Bend County Animal Services, so little that their eyes were still closed with no mom in sight. The shelter looked for fosters to take in the babies but newborn puppies require around the clock care.

That's when a volunteer discovered a stay Great Pyrenees mix on the street who had recently given birth, but her puppies were nowhere to be found. The sweet dog, they named Nova, was still lactating, so they put her with the newborn puppies and they all immediately took to each other.

The article explains that "Nova and the puppies will be available for adoption when the puppies are weaned, Vasquez said. The shelter is taking adoption requests for Nova now, and the approved adopter will have a “hold” for her until the puppies are old enough to leave her."

Such a sweet ending to what could have been a heartbreaking story, and another example of why it's so important to get your pets spayed or neutered.
