One such patient, Darla Jaye, really showed that symbolic bell who's boss when it was her turn to ring the bell on a recent July day. Jaye was diagnosed with breast cancer in February, per CNN, and underwent 30 radiation treatments to fight the aggressive tumor.

"Even though I kind of knew what was coming, you don't really know when you lay down on a radiation bed getting ready for treatment," Jaye — who credits Harris Health System's incredible medical team with saving her llfe — told CNN. "I am very, very grateful." When it came time for her special moment to ring the bell, Jaye didn't hold back. As you can see in the video clip below, she rang it so fervently that the bell even broke.
