Even though most beauty editors groan at the news of yet another celebrity beauty brand, Hailey Bieber’s Rhode Skin seems to be the exception. These days, I can’t go to a work event without seeing a fellow editor swipe on a layer of Rhode’s Peptide Lip Treatment, the brand’s half-gloss-half-balm winner. But now, a full calendar year after the brand launched with their three hero products—Peptide Glazing Fluid, Barrier Restore Cream, and Peptide Lip Treatment—their roster is adding a new player: Glazing Milk, a hydrating, water-light essence that officially launches June 15.

Let me set the scene: My first foray into the brand was met with professional skepticism. My skin is an inconvenient mix of acne-prone and bone-dry, so I was hesitant to layer on possibly pimple-boosting hydrating ingredients onto my already inflamed skin. Slightly comforted by the fact that Mrs. Bieber’s husband is also acne-prone, though, I gave the line a thorough testing, and to my surprise (cue dramatic music) my skin cleared up in record fashion. Now, I’m on my third tube of the Barrier Restore Cream, and my main complaint is that they sell out too quickly for my routine to remain consistent.

Now, while I may be a Rhode convert, fellow beauty editor Beth Gillette had a different experience. “I was pretty elated when Rhode launched in 2022, because, um, obviously, I want Mrs. Bieber’s skin," she says. "But in a devastating turn of events, both the Peptide Glazing Fluid and Barrier Cream cause me to break out in little bb whiteheads." Luckily, she notes that the famed Peptide Lip Treatment works perfectly for her. "So, when the Glazing Milk announcement hit my inbox, I was intrigued yet skeptical.”

Glazing Milk's formula

Rather than relying on peptides and oils, Glazing Milk—a watery, essence-like formula—uses a blend of ceramides (to protect and moisturize your skin barrier), polysaccharides (to pull water into your skin), and zinc and copper (to help defend the skin from pollution). The idea is to apply the essence post-cleanse, pre-serums, as a skin-boosting prep before using the rest of the line (or the rest of your skincare routine).

Our first-person testing

And it’s aptly named, Glazing Milk literally looks like milk when coming out of the tube. Alone, it feels like a very lightweight, hydrating treatment. Underneath the rest of Rhode’s products, it adds a glow that encourages taking multiple selfies. “I’ve been patting it on top of clean, damp skin morning and night for over a week, and I haven’t had a single breakout since,” says Gillette. “Instead, my skin has felt v soft with an ever-so-slight extra lil glow without any added tackiness or excess shine.”

When I first began testing Glazing Milk (out of a little lab sample tube, à la scientist) I had a growing pimple that—either through use of the product or strange coincidence—rose to the surface of my skin and immediately disappeared without leaving mark (a win, if there ever was one). Also, for the sake of true experimentation, I also used Glazing Milk with my other non-Rhode skincare to see if the results were similar, and I’m happy to report that this product played well with others: no dreaded pilling, no catfights, no issues at all.

Our final review

Is the Glazing Milk worth it? A full size bottle retails for $29, what many editors consider a reasonable price, given that comparable products on the market are usually in the range of $30 to $50. If your goal is to layer the Glazing Milk underneath your other Rhode products, I think this essence is a nice but unnecessary addition, unless you’re specifically on the hunt for ceramides. At least on a visual level, you get a similar glow by just using the Glazing Fluid and Barrier Restore Cream on their own.

That being said, if you get creative with application, I think you can get a lot from it. “Is it groundbreaking or necessary in my skincare routine? No, but I like the extra moisture and feel like it might actually be a great, lightweight solution for hydrating my extremely oily skin in the summer," says Gillette. "Now, I just have to find a boat so I can also slather myself in it luxuriously.”
