Although never a necessity, a lot of us enjoy leaning on the helping hand of shapewear on the odd occasion. Form-hugging dresses and even jeans can look smoother with a little compressive suit blurring out the bumps from underneath. But not all shapewear is created equal (far from it) as we found out when we tested over 30 popular styles. Depending on our body type, occasion, and outfit, we found that different materials and shapes suited us differently. While a waist-cinching bodysuit looked great under a dress, a smoothing biker short worked better under a skirt. Not to mention, each had a different compression level, from a squeezed-like-an-orange effect for an hourglass figure to a barely there feeling for natural-looking enhancements.
After a six-week testing period, we narrowed down our favorites to 16 best shapewear pieces based on style and comfort. To set the expectations right here, this option is for anyone looking to significantly cinch in their waist. Does that make it the most comfortable everyday option? Certainly not. But does it create the biggest visual effect? Absolutely. While we struggled to get through the many clasps in the front at first, but once on they stayed put and didn’t pinch in any way. Considering its completely tightening around the middle, it was surprisingly not bothersome to us. It made slipping into high-waisted jeans easy, and dresses with a tighter center looked gorgeous.

There’s a reason why these extra high-waisted shorts have over 57,000 raving reviews as one of Amazon’s best sellers. At a compression level of one, they were an excellent choice for everyday smoothing, rather than tightening and creating a sleek look from waist to legs. They’re high enough to cover the entire belly, so our middle section remained gently tucked in during the duration of wear. Best of all, they were made of lightweight and breathable materials, so we didn’t feel uncomfortable sweating up a storm in it. Thanks to the anti-slip silicone strip, they never rolled or slid up our bodies.

Put down your coffee, this shapewear is 57 percent off right now. The open-bust shaper turned out to be ideal for any low-hanging tops. Not only did it not show from underneath, but it gave our chests an extra little push upward. From top to thigh, this option created one uniform look. What we didn’t expect when we tried this on was how comfortable it was. While it may not look like it, it felt nearly invisible on, rather than giving us that stuffed sausage feel. It even comes with a flap opening around the crotch for easy toilet access, although we did find it easier to just take the whole thing off as maneuvering through the open space proved slightly difficult.

A vital component of shapewear is that it should not show underneath your clothing. These seamless shorts successfully blurred out dimples, created a clean line from hips to thighs, and looked completely invisible under even the most unforgivingly tight clothing. The stretchy silky material felt deliciously soft on the skin; we weren’t left wanting to peel it off at the end of the day. Thanks to the waistband reaching above the belly button, our bellies got a little shaping as well. Overall, we felt comfortable wearing this daily knowing our blood circulation wasn’t getting completely cut off.

This shapewear is nearly half-off its original price right now, which is even more of a steal when you consider its two-in-one capabilities of acting as a cute lace top. It offers bust, tummy, and booty compression, and has a built-in underwire bra as well. We found it slightly strange that we have to choose the size based on the bra cup, as our breast to torso ratio isn’t always one-to-one. Still, we found it easy to slip into and were delighted to find it smoothing out our upper bodies without feeling restrictive.
