Tessa Thompson Takes the Bell-Bottoms Trend to the Next Level

One of fall’s riskiest trends is the return of bell-bottoms. This very ’70s wide-leg trouser cut has appeared on the recent runways at Celine and Gucci, as well as on stylish celebrities such as Katie Holmes, Margot Robbie, and Kim Kardashian West. (It’s even made its way to menswear too, appearing on gents such as Harry Styles and Mark Ronson.) While the flared leg is a statement on its own, however, Tessa Thompson is taking it to the next level: yesterday, the actress attended a special screening of Lady And The Tramp in New York City, and incorporated the silhouette into a daring suiting moment.

Opting for a Spring 2020 design from Loewe, Thompson wore a cotton jacket and trousers that had ruffled hems at the bottom of each piece. The exaggerated flare of her trousers proved to be a more romantic—even a little aristocratic—take on the wide-leg trend that is most famously associated with the decade that taste forgot. (Loewe’s Jonathan Anderson went even further back for this look, citing the 16th and 17th centuries as inspiration for the collection). Underneath, she also wore an extra-long pointy collar shirt that gave it even more theatrical feel. But the final touch was the sleek leather top-handle mini bag Thompson carried, giving the look a more modern spin—the perfect piece to balance out the double-throwback look.
