Tesla continues to dominate the world of electric vehicles, but – as evidenced by his ventures into interplanetary and subterranean travel – CEO Elon Musk is ever the entrepreneur. And if the latest rumors are to be believed, Musk might be exploring the lucrative world of smartphones with the production of a so-called “Tesla Phone.”
Is Tesla Making a Phone?
First and foremost, Tesla has yet to announce the production of a Tesla Phone. Rumors continue to swirl about a supposed Tesla Pi Phone (or Tesla Model Pi), but neither Musk nor anyone associated with the company has released official renders, specifications or related info.
The Model Pi speculation is largely driven by unofficial mockups on YouTube and Twitter, with a variety of designs floating around – along with a wild list of specs. For example, the phone would be able to efficiently mine cryptocurrency, be entirely solar-powered and make use of Neuralink, a technology that’s yet to be proven and likely years away from deployment.
Further discrediting the Tesla Pi Phone are comments from Musk himself, as back in 2020 he called smartwatches and phones “yesterday’s technology.” It’s highly unlikely for someone to invest in technology they see as dated, and while Musk no doubt courts controversy, he’s nothing if not a savvy investor.
Tesla Phone Release Date
While all signs indicate the Tesla Phone is a hoax, many rumors are pointing towards a 2022 release. The chances of that happening seem about as close to zero as you can get, but sometimes it’s hard to pin down what the company is truly working on. Until hard evidence comes out to prove otherwise, it’s unlikely a Tesla cell phone is in development.
How Much is the Tesla Phone?
With no official announcement, it’s difficult to say how much the Tesla Phone would cost. Based on its solar-powered battery, crypto mining efficiency and Neuralink support, there’s little doubt such a product would rival flagship products from Samsung and Apple. If it ever did see the light of day, we’d expect the Tesla Phone price to hover around the $1,000 mark.
Tesla Phone Features Seem Too Good to be True
The fact that Tesla is yet to confirm any details about the Pi Phone is reason enough to be skeptical about its existence. If that’s not convincing, you can also look at its sci-fi spec sheet, which gives it numerous features that the world is yet to see in a smartphone:
Controlled using your brain via Neuralink
Innovative night-vision cameras
Solar-charging via a transparent solar panel on the back of the device
Connects with your Tesla vehicle for self-driving capabilities and interior controls
Many of these features come from a Tesla Model Pi mockup posted to YouTube in early 2021. The renders, created by ADR Studio Design, are not associated with Tesla in any official capacity. They’ve no doubt caused a stir, however, with dozens of spin-offs over the past few months and nearly 200,000 views on YouTube at the time of writing.
Then again, Musk does play his cards close to his chest, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that a Tesla Model Pi could drop within the next few years. It’s highly unlikely, but with smartphones continuing to pull in piles of cash, and Tesla no doubt one of the best-known tech companies on the planet, there certainly could be wild demand for a Tesla-based smartphone.
