Telluride Hit With Rare Summer Snowfall

It's June. For most skiers in North America, white-capped peaks are a distant fantasy only visited in memory.

But yesterday, June 1st, Telluride Ski Resort, Colorado, experienced an out-of-season treat: fresh snowfall. See images of this rare event below.

I have mixed feelings about summer snowfall. On the one hand, I'm always excited when resorts receive a fresh blanketing of snow. On the other, I know that despite Telluride's freak storm, we're actually five months away from the start of next season, meaning the resort's summer snow is nothing more than a tease.

See, when a resort usually posts images like this, I know summer's finally coming to an end, and I start fantasizing about the season to come. I gaze longingly at my skis as I pass through my gear closet and text old friends about planning trips as the days become shorter, and the trees lose their leaves. At this point in my life, eagerly scouring the internet for those first dumps of the year has become a ritual.

But after viewing these images posted by Telluride, I'm feeling lost and confused. What good is fresh snow if it will just melt within a week? Sure, it's nice to look at, but it ultimately feels like Mother Nature's playing "Gotcha!" on us skiers.

I think summer's best enjoyed by completely forgetting skiing exists, not being tempted by snow storms that came five months too early. But I'm an optimist. A somewhat delusional part of me hopes Telluride's fresh snow means winter's getting an absurdly early start.
