Teen Choice Awards 2018: Maddie Ziegler Wore a Scrunchie on the Red Carpet

Maddie Ziegler may have been born in 2002, but she proved that she's a '90s girl at heart. She showed up to the 2018 Teen Choice Awards rocking one of the decade's biggest beauty trends: A new (and dare we say, improved?) take on the scrunchie.

The dancer/designer pulled her newly lightened locks into a high ponytail, and secured it with a thick black cuff on the top of her head. She curled the ends for some extra volume, and left two pieces loose to frame her face. She paired the pony with a bronze eye and lip and some artfully placed highlighter, which made her look positively glow-y.

Maddie's hairstylist, Justine Marjan, shared her secrets behind the look to Instagram, which means we will fully be copying the style for the rest of the summer. She started by prepping Maddie's damp hair with Tresemme Repair and Protect Leave-in Conditioner, then spritzed her strands with Ouai Wave Spray before blowdrying. Justine gave Maddie some extra volume by clipping in some extensions, then brushed through some Tresemme Micro Mist Hairspray. Next, she used a GHD Curve Soft Curl curling iron in alternate directions to add even more oomph.

For the actual ponytail, Justine rubbed R+Co Pomade into her hands, then secured the top half of Maddie's hair with an elastic from Kitsch. She repeated the process with the bottom half of her hair, and tied the two sections together with a Kitsch Bungee. Then, she lifted the ponytail and back brushed it to add texture, and sprayed more of the Tresemme Hairspray all over. Finally, she accessorized the look with a Jennifer Behr leather hair cuff around the ponytail.

Maddie wasn't the only star to show up on the Teen Choice Awards red carpet rocking a scrunchie. Meghan Trainor, Loren Gray, and Evvie Mckinney all pulled their hair into similar styles, which means the '90s beauty is officially back for the the stars of the '00s.
