AppleTV+ finally reveals Ted Lasso season 3 premiere date and a full trailer.

Even if you don’t like sports, chances are you will like—or already love—AppleTV+'s Ted Lasso. The comedy series about an uber-positive college football coach who gets put in charge of a British soccer team was like chicken soup for the pandemic soul in 2020.

What started as a funny promo for NBC Sports has turned into a bonafide hit; it’s the No. 1 show on AppleTV+. Not only that, but Ted Lasso and the man who plays the title role, SNL alum Jason Sudeikis (with an impressive mustache), racked up a whopping 20 Emmy nominations in 2021, breaking the all-time record for a comedy in its first season. (The beloved show ended up winning seven awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series, at the 73rd annual Emmy Awards on Sept. 19. In the pressroom, Sudeikis, whose character has taught him "that optimism is a better way to go even though pessimism can sometimes get an easy laugh," revealed that Apple has already asked for 12 episodes in Season 3. "We'll be doing 12 episodes," the Emmy winner said. "As of now."

Season 2 of Ted Lasso dropped in July 2021, and believe it or not, it's gaining more raves as being even better than it was before, with fans already clamoring for more of this feel-good show. Want to keep smiling with Ted? Here’s what we know about so far about a Ted Lasso Season 3.

Is there going to be a third season of Ted Lasso?

Yes! Apple TV+ was so confident about the show's future that they renewed the series for seasons 2 and 3 back in August and October 2020, respectively.

When will season 3 of Ted Lasso start?

Season 3 of Ted Lasso began filming in London on March 6, 2022. The Ted Lasso season 3 premiere is March 15, 2023.

What happened in season 1 of Ted Lasso?

(Warning: Ted Lasso season 1 spoilers follow!)

Season 1 very much began as a fish-out-of-water tale as American college football coach Ted Lasso (Sudeikis) went to coach the fictional UK Premier League football (or what Americans would call soccer) team, A.F.C. Richmond. Ted’s kind and upbeat personality almost made up for his lack of soccer knowledge as he worked on improving the team, both on and off the field.

At first, Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham), the team’s owner, only hired Ted to tank the team and get back at her ex-husband, the former owner—but as the season progressed, she began to respect Ted. A surprising, last-minute game loss to Manchester City knocked the A.F.C. Richmond team out of their division and prompted Ted to offer a resignation letter to Rebecca, who refused to accept it.

What happened in Season 2 of Ted Lasso?

Then in Season 2, according to a teaser, “kindness makes a comeback.” The 12-episode season followed the team as they tried to make their way back into the Premier League. But first, “people go into their caves and face their s--t,” Sudeikis told Entertainment Weekly in June 2021.

Characters seem to be somewhat adrift at the start of the new season: Dani Rojas (Cristo Fernandez) accidentally kills the team’s mascot with an ill-aimed penalty kick, new assistant coach Nathan (Nick Mohammed) could be nicer to Charlie (Will Hisock), the person who took over his old job as equipment manager, and retired player Roy (Brett Goldstein) is coaching his niece’s peewee football team. Even Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster) finds himself on a reality show called Lust Conquers All.

To help them out, Sarah Niles was cast as Dr. Sharon Fieldstone, a sports psychologist who helps the team process the events of season 1 and their personal struggles.

We also got to meet someone new—Ted Lasso’s grumpier, table-flipping alter-ego. His name? Led Tasso.

Over the rest of the season, we watched the friendship continued to grow between Keeley (Juno Temple) and Rebecca. At a crossroads after a career-ending injury in the final game of last season, Roy tries on many hats as he searches for the next step in his career before landing on Richmond's newest coach, much to Nate's consternation.

A unexpected romance blossomed Rebecca and Sam Obisanya (Toheeb Jimoh) after the two connected on Bantr, a new dating app that Keeley was shilling where there are no pictures, only texts.

In a particularly poignant scene in episode 10 of season 2 "No Weddings and a Funeral," Rebecca and Ted (in different locations) recount particularly heart-wrenching moments in their lives that involved their fathers.

Sam had to weigh an offer from Ghanian billionaire Edwin Akufo (Sam Richardson) to leave Richmond for a nonexistent team that Akufo would eventually own and Isaac McAdoo (Kola Bokinni) rediscovered his love for the game.

Fun fact: Toheeb Jimoh plays a character named Sam who was named after Sam Richardson who plays a character named Edwin and Edwin de la Renta plays Francis, Edwin's bodyguard. Can you image the chaos on the set when all three are filming?

By season's end, A.F.C. Richmond was promoted back up to the Premier League where they'll have to face West United Ham now owned by Rebecca's ex, Rupert Mannion (Anthony Head) and its new coach, Nate.

What will happen in Season 3 of Ted Lasso?

In season 3, the newly promoted AFC Richmond faces ridicule as media predictions widely peg them as last in the Premier League and Nate (Nick Mohammed), now hailed as the “wonder kid,” has gone to work for Rupert (Anthony Head) at West Ham United. In the wake of Nate’s contentious departure from Richmond, Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) steps up as assistant coach, alongside Beard (Brendan Hunt). Meanwhile, while Ted (Jason Sudeikis) deals with pressures at work, he continues to wrestle with his own personal issues back home, Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) is focused on defeating Rupert, and Keeley (Juno Temple) navigates being the boss of her own PR agency. Things seem to be falling apart both on and off the pitch, but Team Lasso is set to give it their best shot anyway.

Jason Sudeikis has frequently said he envisions the series as a three-season arc so we can expect some storylines to wrap up in season 3. Will Roy and Keely break up or get married? Will Trent Crimm of The Independent finally write a tell-all exposé on the Greyhounds? Will Ted and Coach Beard return to the States never to return to London?

Producer Kip Kroeger told Deadline at the PGA Awards of season 3, “It’s deeper into the backstories. You know, we’re going to get a little more information about where they came from.”

Keep an eye out here for more details on the upcoming season as we learn more!

Are there spoilers for Ted Lasso season 3?

Season 3 of Ted Lasso has finished filming in London, but still not many spoilers so far. However, if season 2 saw the team moving again back up to the Premier League, season 3 could be about how the team ends up on top and wins it all. With Nate now coaching West Ham, we're likely to see a match or two between them and Richmond.

How was the character of Ted Lasso created?

Ted Lasso was a character created by Sudeikis, Hunt and Kelley back in 2013 for NBC’s promos of their coverage of Premier League soccer in the U.S. Titled "An American Coach in London," the first skit was a five-minute comedy sketch created as a showcase for the peculiarities of the English sport for U.S. fans.

In a long-forgotten 2013 interview with Spurs TV, Sudeikis explained the character this way:

“I’m playing an American football coach who’s come over to Tottenham to implement American football things, styles and ways into soccer, into European football… unsuccessfully, I would say. Comedically, hopefully, but definitely unsuccessfully.”

The quite hilarious promos sat on a shelf for quite a while before Bill Lawrence, creator of Scrubs, came on to help further develop the characters and story into the hit series has become for Apple TV+.

Will there be more seasons of Ted Lasso after season 3?

Ted Lasso’s meteoric rise would almost guarantee more seasons for any other show, but Sudeikis and the other co-creators of the comedy say they only planned three seasons. And it looks like they're sticking to that game plan.

In an interview with the UK’s Sunday Times, co-star Brett Goldstein says season 3 will be the team's last.

“We are writing it like that,” he says. “It was planned as three. Spoiler alert: everyone dies.”

Brendan Hunt, who helped develop the show and also plays Coach Beard, told Entertainment Weekly in June 2021, “None of us were prepared to the degree to which people love this show.” He also said that creators always saw it as a “three-season situation.” Still, Hunt admits that with the show’s overwhelming popularity, “perhaps that intention will be challenged a little bit, but that’s where our head is at right now.”

Sudeikis echoed this sentiment just one day before season 2 premiered, telling Hoda Kotb on Today, that three seasons “was just the way [we] conceived” Ted Lasso. Hunt was quick to add, “We also assumed we would be well tired of it after two [seasons] but no, we’re not, so that screws up the whole plan.”

Producer Liza Katzer told Deadline, “That is the question. We don’t know. We hope it goes on… Initially we were down for three, but it’s up in the air at the moment.”

While co-creator and showrunner Bill Lawrence stated he'd "love the show to keep going" in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last year, Brendan Hunt recently confirmed in an interview that season 3 of Ted Lasso would indeed be its last.

Lawrence also sent out a cryptic tweet. Is he referring to Ted Lasso?

Has Ted Lasso won any awards?

The show ended up winning seven awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series, at the 73rd annual Emmy Awards on Sept. 19.

The series and cast has also won several awards including Golden Globe, Critic’s Choice and SAG Best Actor in a Comedy Series awards for Sudeikis and Best Ensemble-Comedy for the cast, Critic’s Choice award for Best Actress for Waddingham and Writer’s Guild of America awards for Best New Series and Best Comedy Series.

The show racked up another 20 Emmy nominations in 2022. Ted Lasso also received nods for Jason Sudeikis (Best Actor in a Comedy Series), Outstanding Single Camera Editing for a Comedy Series (for both "Rainbow" and "No Weddings and a Funeral" episodes), and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.

At the 2022 Emmys, Ted Lasso won for Best Supporting Actor - Comedy Series for Goldstein, Best Actor = Comedy Series for Sudeikis and Outstanding Comedy Series.
