Just 30 miles from San Francisco, this epic estate in affluent Alamo, California, is back on the market for $35 million.

The Bay Area home, called Fieldhaven Estate, was built in 2012 by tech billionaire David Duffield, founder of PeopleSoft and co-founder of Workday, Inc. It was designed and built over a seven year period at a cost of $135 million. Tucked within Alamo’s lush countryside, the 21-acre estate includes a sprawling main residence, two guest homes, a car barn that will hold 20 vehicles, a kid’s treehouse, two swimming pools, and a dog spa.

Duffield and his wife, Cheryl, sold up in 2020 to J. Taylor Crandall, founder of private equity firm Oak Hill Capital, for $19 million. A passionate animal activist, Duffield donated all proceeds of the sale to Maddie’s Fund, a no-kill pet shelter he founded in 1994 in the East Bay named after their family’s miniature schnauzer, who died of cancer.

The baronial living room features an antique French fireplace.

Over the last few years, Crandall has shelled out more than $6 million in updates and upgrades to the home, which was originally designed by Remick Associates Architects and built by Master Builders. The massive mansion, inspired by a French countryside chateau with stone walls, several antique fireplaces, and reclaimed wood beams, spans 23,314 square feet with 10 bedrooms and 22 bathrooms.

The home has exceptional views of the rolling hills that comprise and surround the estate from nearly every room and pairs rustic elegance with modern flair. The living room features an antique French limestone fireplace, vaulted ceilings, and a wet bar with bar seating. There’s also a formal dining room and a French country-style kitchen, outfitted with brick inlay detailing, which connects to a patio. Nearly every room has floor-to-ceiling windows or doors that let in plenty of natural light and connect to outdoor patios, so you’re never too far from the verdant grounds that surround the home.

The French country-style kitchen is centered around two large islands.

The main house is spread across two floors, and the bedrooms are like their own apartments. Each ample, light-filled room has large windows and closets, as well as an opulent en-suite marble bathroom with windows overlooking the countryside. The primary suite’s bathroom is particularly impressive, with a sumptuous day bed, dual sinks, a built-in marble tub, and a separate marble shower.

Filled with so many amenities you might never want to leave, Fieldhaven offers a wine cellar with a custom-designed iron door designed by an Austrian blacksmith; a movie theater; an outdoor kitchen and dining area; a heated swimming pool as well as a cold plunge pool; outdoor showers; European-style fountains; and vast stretches of evenly mown lawn.

For overnight guests, there is a detached 1,115-square-foot, two-bedroom guest house with its own kitchen and living room. The car barn, with custom car lifts that allow it to hold more than 20 cars, includes a 1,404-square-foot, one-bedroom, one-bath guest or staff apartment with a living room and a full kitchen on the top floor.

The dog spa, complete with a bath and grooming area, was installed by Duffield, and, adding to the animal-focused amenities, there’s a soundproof aviary built to house Duffield’s four parrots, which was designed by John Aiken, a curator and aviary expert for the San Francisco Zoo. Families looking for the ultimate kid-centric property will be delighted with the whimsical treehouse, which was designed by San Francisco-based designer Barbara Butler and features a 75-foot suspension bridge.

Crandall, who is selling the property to be closer to his children’s schools, installed a solar field to power the entire estate and upgraded the electronic engineering throughout the entire property. The pristine property is just 30 miles from San Francisco and near the rolling vineyards of Sonoma and Napa Valley. It’s co-listed by Marilee Headen of Compass and Taso Tzakos of Engel and Volkers.
