How would you like a spot of tea in the afternoon?

In Great Britain, it’s commonplace to have afternoon tea.

Here in the United States, meeting at coffee shops seems to be a daily ritual for many. But, tea rooms are also a thing, too, and there are plenty of those in New Jersey.

Here are six tea rooms to check out in South Jersey:

Boukakuan Japanese Tea House & Garden, Columbus

The traditional Japanese tea house, owned by Drew Hanson, is open by appointment only. Customers can call or visit the website for booking information.

Visitors can taste authentic green tea, feed koi in a pond, or attend a Japanese Tea Ceremony lesson. Those are available Wednesdays at 10 a.m.

Drew Hanson, owner of Boukakuan Tea House and Garden in Columbus, N.J., demonstrates a traditional Japanese tea ceremony that has an approximately 450-year history. The session includes a demonstration and instruction on the traditional tea ceremony, a walk through the garden, a purification ritual and a brief lecture on the history and development of the ceremony.

“We are a traditional Japanese tea room. Come and experience the Japanese way of tea. You will see how matcha has been prepared for centuries. The host will serve matcha tea and traditional Japanese sweets in the intimate setting of small tatami room.”

Jane’s Tea House, Haddon Heights

Tea flavors include Buckingham Palace Garden Party, English Breakfast, Earl Grey, Apple Crunch, Boysenberry, Caramel Cherry Cheesecake, Ginger Peach, Hazelnut Vanilla, Cookies and Cream and more.

Visitors can reserve a table for indoor or outdoor seating. There is an adult afternoon tea menu. The cost is $34.95, $32.95 for seniors and it includes sandwiches, scones, cookies and more.

Jane’s Tea House hosts painting parties, tea leaf reading parties, Little Mermaid Par-tea, Downton Abbey tea parties and more.

La Mademoiselle Macaron, Mullica Hill

The French bakery serves afternoon tea by reservation only.

The bakery is located in the heart of antique row on Main Street in Mullica Hill and offers a variety of French macaron flavors, tarts and pastries each week.

But the afternoon tea is the thing as well. There’s the Marie Antoinette Tea (includes five tea sandwiches, scones, French desserts and pastries), La Mademoiselle Tea (five tea sandwiches and unlimited tea), Cream Tea, Dessert tea, or their children’s tea menus. Prices range from $12 to $28.

The shop also specializes in bridal and baby showers, sweet 16s, birthdays, and anniversaries.

The New Leaf Tea Room & Gift Shoppe, Riverton

The New Leaf Team Room is ins a restored 1910 Victorian storefront and an adjacent 1898 house.

It's a short walk from the Delaware River and has been in Riverton for more than 30 years.

Themed teas are offered with entertaining musical, historical and theatrical presentations. There are also freshly baked scones, seasonal fruit, assorted tea sandwiches, desserts, and of course, tea.

The setting takes you back in time with its chandeliers and parlor décor. It hosts showers, family reunions, children’s parties and other events.

The gift shop sells unique items, including children’s tea sets, candles, and more.

Prince Tea House, Marlton

A wide menu offering includes regular sandwiches, salads, scones, more than 20 desserts, 30-plus teas and coffees.

Prince Tea House, which opened in the spring of 2023, is open daily for the entire afternoon and half of the evening.

The newly opened Prince Tea House on W. Route 70 at N. Cropwell Road in Marlton offers more than afternoon tea. It is the first of the company's franchises to come to  South Jersey.

The franchise describes itself as “an Asian-run but French-inspired tea and dessert restaurant.”

The dining room has elegant décor with both Asian and European flair that extends to the menu, written in both English and Chinese, and to menu selections.

Your Cup of Tea, Mount Holly

Owner Susan Peterson has collected teacups and teapots for as long as she can remember.

Her family lived in a bed and breakfast in London when she was a child. That’s where her love for scones and tea started.

She opened her dream tea house on High Street in Mount Holly in 2022.

Afternoon tea parties last for an hour and a half and must be pre-booked for $28.95 per person. There are also options for high tea/dinner on Sunday evening or children’s tea parties.
