People Are Sharing Their Favorite Pop Culture Memories, And I'm Not Even Slightly Upset That These Will Be Embedded In My Brain For The Rest Of My Life

Twitter user @karinasophia12 asked, "Outside of 9/11, what's a major historical event you lived through that you'll never forget where you were when it happened?"

While the original tweet was posted in May 2021, it's been all over my timeline again over the past week or so. But this time, Twitter users are taking the pop culture approach, and are sharing some of the most memorable celeb moments.

Some of them sent me way back down memory lane and honestly had me wracking my brain to remember where I was when all of these iconic events occurred. Here are 21 of my faves:

1.When Dakota Johnson called Ellen out for lying about not being invited to her birthday party:

In an incredibly awkward but instantly iconic interview, Ellen asked Dakota, "How was the party? I wasn't invited." Dakota instantly clapped back, delivering a line that will live rent-free in my head for all of eternity: "Actually, no, that's not the truth, Ellen. You were invited."

2.When Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the 2009 VMAs:

The Taylor–Kanye drama is a decade-long ordeal, but it all began when Kanye stormed the stage during Taylor's acceptance speech for Best Video by a Female Artist and declared, "I’mma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time! One of the best videos of all time!" Beyoncé was understandably mortified and invited Taylor on stage when she took home the Best Video of the Year later that night.

3.When Kim Cattrall had enough of Sarah Jessica Parker:

The feud between the two Sex and the City stars has been well-documented, but it took a turn when SJP spoke about Cattrall's brother's tragic death at a 2016 premiere. Cattrall took to social media to tell Parker how she really felt.

4.When the Oscars screwed up and announced La La Land as the Best Picture winner, when Moonlight really nabbed the prize:

The 2017 Academy Awards ended in chaos when Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announced La La Land had won Best Picture. During the acceptance speeches, La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz proclaimed there had been a mistake and that Moonlight had actually won the night's biggest award. The culprit? An envelope mix-up where Beatty and Dunaway had been given a duplicate copy of the Best Actress envelope, which had gone to Emma Stone for her role in La La Land.

5.When the creator of Flappy Bird annouced he was pulling the game from the App Store, right when it was at its peak of popularity:

The cult favorite game was taken off of app stores everywhere after the game's creator, Dong Nguyen said the game's popularity had ruined his life, expressing that he didn't like all of the attention the app has brought him.

6.When Tati Westbrook posted a YouTube video detailing allegations against her close friend and fellow beauty guru James Charles, spawning one of the biggest YouTube feuds of all time:

In May 2019, Tati pretty much broke the Internet when she released her "Bye Sister" video, in which she announced she was ending her long-time friendship with James and revealed some harassment claims against the beauty guru. He promptly released his own apology video (complete with receipts!), detailing his side of the story. The two have not been able to repair their relationship, and James has found himself involved in several other scandals since.

7.When celebrities (led by Gal Gadot) released a video of them singing John Lennon's "Imagine," which (I guess?) was supposed to calm our fears about the pandemic, but really just felt a little weird:

Gadot thought she was doing something when she recruited Mark Ruffalo, Natalie Portman, Jimmy Fallon, and a few other celebrity pals to each sing a line of the classic song from their quarantine locations. The resulting video instantly went viral, but not for the reason Gadot was hoping. People couldn't help but roast their rendition, and their reactions are truly the gift that keeps on giving.

8.When Beyoncé very nonchalantly celebrated the release of her self-titled album with some cupcakes and the Internet couldn't believe it:

When Beyoncé spontaneously dropped her 2013 album with no announcement, her fans understandably had no chill. Although the album was amazing, people couldn't get over her very low-key social media presence about the whole thing, choosing to post a picture of her vegan cupcakes instead of, you know, promoting her album.

9.When Constance Wu revealed that she was less-than-thrilled that her show Fresh Off The Boat was renewed:

When the ABC sitcom Fresh Off The Boat was renewed in May 2019, Constance fired off a few rather unhappy tweets about the situation, causing fans to wonder if she hated starring on the hit show. She later clarified her reaction. "I was temporarily upset yesterday not bc I hate the show but bc its renewal meant I had to give up another project that I was really passionate about. So my dismayed social media replies were more about that other project and not about FOTB."

10.When Ariana Grande released "Thank U, Next" and name-dropped all of her exes:

The "Thank U, Next" video not only paid homage to some of the most iconic rom-coms of all time and included a slew of celebrity guest stars, but also snuck in a series of hidden messages about some of her exes in a Mean Girls-inspired Burn Book. According to Ari, Big Sean "could still get it." She also wrote "sry I dipped" about her relationship with Pete Davidson, confirming that she was the one who ended their engagement.

11.When John Travolta flubbed the pronunciation of Idina Menzel's name at the Oscars, dubbing her "Adele Dazeem" instead:

On the heels of Frozen, Idina Menzel was everywhere. John Travolta must have somehow missed the Menzel madness and instead called someone named "Adele Dazeem" to the stage, launching one of my all-time favorite memes. Luckily, the pair was able to joke about it during the next year's ceremony.

12.When queens of pop Madonna, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera made VMAs history with their steamy performance:

Britney and Christina teamed up to perform Madonna's 1980s classic "Like A Virgin" at the 2003 VMAs, and were later joined onstage by Madonna herself. The performance only got wilder from there, with Britney and Madonna sharing a smooch during the song. Madonna also kissed Christina, but the cameras had panned to Britney's recent ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake, missing the lip lock.

13.When (spoiler alert!) Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, who both once played Spider-Man, appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home and reduced audiences everywhere to tears:

After lots and lots of hints and even more denials, Marvel fans everywhere lost it when the former Spideys reunited to help Tom Holland's version of the character save the world.

14.When Selena Gomez announced that she had gotten a kidney transplant:

After announcing she was taking a break from the spotlight to focus on her health, Selena received a kidney from her best friend and fellow actress Francia Raisa in 2017. Selena, who was diagnosed with lupus in 2013, revealed the news in an Instagram post and shared photos of her surgical scars.

15.When Taylor Swift ushered in her "Reputation" era with the quote heard 'round the world: "The old Taylor can't come to the phone right now. Why? She's dead.":

Swifties everywhere knew that something was up after Taylor adopted a snake motif on her social media accounts in the aftermath of her drama with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. The controversy involved a 2016 phone call in which Kanye claims he asked Taylor for permission to name-drop her in his song "Famous."

16.When the world was shocked by the photos of the subpar food and lodging coming from the Fyre Festival:

Attendees thought they were headed to the festival of a lifetime when they jetted off to a private island in the Bahamas to see artists like Major Lazer and Blink-182. Upon arrival, they learned that they had been scammed after the headliners dropped out, their accommodations weren't as advertised, and the caterer's contract was terminated. The Bahamian government eventually canceled the entire event and organizer Billy McFarland was sentenced to six years in prison for the whole ordeal.

17.When Zayn Malik shocked Directioners by announcing he was leaving the band:

After five years in the band, Zayn Malik announced he was leaving One Direction in March 2015. When announcing his departure, Zayn said that he wanted to live out of the spotlight as a normal 22-year-old. He released a solo album in 2016. One Direction eventually went on an "indefinite hiatus" in 2016 after releasing one final album without Zayn.

18.When Nicki Minaj clapped back at Miley Cyrus during the 2015 VMAs with her iconic "Miley, what's good" line:

After releasing her "Anaconda" video in 2015, Nicki Minaj lamented the video's lack of VMA nominations and wondered if it was because it wasn't full of "skinny white women" like some of the other nominees. Taylor Swift, whose video for "Bad Blood" ended up winning the award, took it as a hit at her. Although Nicki and Taylor made amends, Miley Cyrus made some unfavorable comments about Nicki's thoughts to a magazine, prompting Nicki's response at the VMAs.

19.When Anna Kendrick's "Cups" performance in Pitch Perfect made Solo Cup sales skyrocket (can't verify this, but gauging from everyone at my high school who took up a sudden interest in playing the cups once this song dropped, I wouldn't be surprised):

Did anyone expect this to become the phenomenon that it did? Anna Kendrick's performance of "Cups" dominated the charts, reaching number six on the Billboard Hot 100. Kendrick told Glamour that she had just learned the song for fun after coming across it on Reddit, and played it during filming instead of performing "I'm A Little Teacup," which is what the script originally called for.

20.When Disney Channel released the most iconic crossover known to mankind: That's So Suite Life of Hannah Montana:

Disney Channel fans around the world rejoiced when the network brought together the casts of three of their most iconic shows — The Suite Life of Zach and Cody, That's So Raven, and Hannah Montana — to film a mega episode that aired in 2006. The crossover event was so popular, the channel aired another one, Wizards On Deck With Hannah Montana, a few years later.

21.When Kylie Jenner, after months of speculation, dropped a YouTube video confirming she had given birth to Stormi, her first child:

Jenner hadn't even confirmed that she was expecting and had largely disappeared from the public eye during her pregnancy, but eagle-eyed fans had long suspected she was with child thanks to subtle hints like posting pink and blue phone cases on her Snapchat and Kris Jenner teasing a pair of newborn Christmas pajamas on her Instagram.
