Taylor Swift Watched "City of Lover" Concert Special with Fans

Taylor Swift had to postpone Lover Fest, the concert festival she planned in conjunction with her new album of the same name, but she isn’t letting the change in plans stop her from connecting with fans all over the world.

On May 17, a month to the day after the singer formally delayed all of her live appearances and performances until at least 2021 due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, she logged online to watch the City of Lover concert special on ABC. As Yahoo! News notes, she engaged with fans as they live-tweeted the special, which was filmed at Paris’s L’Olympia Theater last September, just after the Lover EP dropped. Taylor and her team likely didn’t plan on releasing the footage as a bittersweet love letter to fans who were (and are still) psyched to see the singer in concert, and she more than made up for any understandable heartbreak with intimate details about her songwriting process, and the meaning behind some of the Lover tracks.

Of particular note were the acoustic renditions of “Cornelia Street,” “The Man,” and “Death By a Thousand Cuts,” all of which take on a new layer of resonance when stripped down. “I was thinking about how I'd really like to play some of these songs for the very first time, and I was thinking maybe the best way to do it would be just playing the songs acoustic, the way that I wrote them,” she shared during the concert.

She also called “Cornelia Street,” “definitely one of those nostalgic ones,” per Billboard, and she apparently wrote the track in the bathtub at home. (Hey, when the inspiration strikes…!) She added that she “use[s] songs almost like photographs, so I can go back to a time, to a memory, so I can experience it.” She may be currently quarantining at home with boyfriend Joe Alwyn, but the duo can revisit the New York City street any time through the song, which is rumored to be about the actor.

Taylor also uploaded all of the tracks from the concert special to her YouTube page, in case you’re looking for some live music to power your at-home work this week. She also took the time to thank a fan who works as an emergency room nurse in New York: “Thank you so much for everything you do and how hard you’re working to keep us safe,” she wrote.
