Taylor Swift Wants Us to Think She Listens to Nirvana Now

Ooooh, Taylor Swift. I liked you so much. I wept to your songs and sang them in the shower (OK, fine, I may still do that, and defended you when others questioned your talent. Sure, your PDA-ravaged relationship with Adam “Calvin Harris” Wiles threw me off a bit — but now you’ve really pushed me off the edge. The plaid, Taylor — it’s GOT TO STOP.

Basically, Swiffer wore plaid getups both yesterday during the day and to Anna Wintour’s pre-Met Gala party on Sunday night. (Nothing like a party to celebrate another party, right?) There wasn’t a sequin in sight, nor a skater skirt, and nary an Oxford heel. Her loose-fitting party frock looked more like Angela Chase’s dream prom dress than one of Swift’s Oscar de la Renta staples.

I’m not saying people’s personal styles can’t change. Of course they can! Look at Miley Cyrus, or even Rihanna. Over time, their looks have evolved to be a bit more risqué, more daring, more true to their current selves.

But Taylor Swift’s sudden shift to the grunge side has me seeing flashbacks of this girl I worked with at Dunkin’ Donuts in high school: One day she was shopping at Hollister and popping her collars, and the next, she’d dyed her brown hair black, gotten a Monroe piercing, and started going to hardcore shows. At the time, I thought she was the ultimate poser. But now Ms. Swift has snatched her title.

So Anna likes your new bleached-out bob and your “rock-and-roll chick” tartans and lug-soled boots — thinks they make you look “young and modern and different.” Congrats! That’s awesome. But when you go home to your country home-themed manse at night and throw on your oversize pioneer woman nightgown and kiss your cats named after empowered female network television characters, you can’t hide from your truth, Tay: The most played song on your iTunes is 100 percent by Selena Gomez — not Nirvana.

UPDATE: Surprise, surprise, Tay-Tay took her new look to the Met Gala red carpet, rocking a silver scaly custom Louis Vuitton cutout dress, lace-up sandals, her now signature platinum bob, setting the ensemble off with a deep-hued lippie. Is the outfit and styling on point? Absolutely. Does Taylor look a little like she’s playing dress up and less like she’s actually about that glam grunge life? Ummm… yeah. Does she look amazing? Well, duh, of course she does.
