Taylor Swift's Parents, Scott And Andrea, Have Been Married For 35 Years

If you are even the slightest of a Taylor Swift fan, you are probably very familiar with her family. In fact, she even gives them all individual callouts in her song "The Best Day." The song, which she wrote as a present for her mom back when she was recording the Fearless album in 2008, is mostly about her mom, Andrea, but also features a verse that talks about her dad, Scott, and her younger brother, Austin.
Taylor is a pretty family-oriented person, and even says her mom is her best friend. So it was kind of a big deal when news broke that Taylor's parents might be meeting her boyfriend Travis Kelce's parents for the very first time at the Kansas City Chiefs game on Monday, Nov. 20, per Entertainment Tonight. Also a big deal: The Chiefs play the Philadelphia Eagles (which happens to be the Swift family's chosen NFL team, cue "gold rush").
However, Taylor had to postpone her Eras Tour show on Saturday night in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil due to the extreme heat, and rescheduled it for Monday, per People. So, she won't be at the game to watch Travis play, and that means her parents might not be either.
Still, I'm excited for this hypothetical parental pairing to meet eventually, and it seems people online are, too. In fact, one viral tweet claims that Andrea Swift and Donna Kelce would "run Joann Fabrics like the navy." And considering fans already got some wholesome moments between Travis and Scott Swift at the Eras Tour last weekend, I'm sure Tay's dad will hit it off just fine with Ed Kelce, too.
Scott and Andrea Swift are names that can be whipped out from every Swiftie's vernacular, but here's what to know about Taylor's folks if you're just a casual fan, or if you want to know even more about the nepo-parents (has that phrase been coined yet?).
Taylor's parents raised her and Austin on a Christmas tree farm.
Taylor's Christmas discography includes some of her lesser known tracks, but she did pen a song based on her experience growing up on a Christmas tree farm in her song, aptly titled "Christmas Tree Farm."
This "farm," (a word Taylor may be throwing out generously) was located in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, and included 11 acres of land, according to Business Insider. She even shared a photo of the farm on her Instagram to promote her Christmas single in 2019.
At some point during Taylor's early childhood, they relocated to a house at 78 Grandview Boulevard in Wyomissing, before moving to Nashville in 2004 to assist with Taylor's aspiring music career, per Business Insider.
Andrea and Scott both worked in finance.
Long before Taylor became a billionaire, she came from a financially-savvy family. In fact, both of her parents had promising finance careers before she became a star, per Rolling Stone. Andrea Swift worked as a marketing manager at an advertising agency, per PEOPLE, while Scott Swift appears to still be working as the managing director at Merrill Lynch, according to the company's website.
In 2008, Taylor's former manager, Rick Barker, told Entertainment Weekly that Taylor's parents were marketing geniuses (which probably comes as no surprise to Swifties who know about Taylor's Easter eggs). "The mom and dad both have great marketing minds. I don't want to say fake it until you make it, but when you looked at her stuff, it was very professional even before she got her deal," he said at the time.
Fun fact: Taylor's mom also named her "Taylor" because she liked that it was androgynous. "My mom thought it was cool that if you got a business card that said 'Taylor' you wouldn't know if it was a guy or a girl," the singer-songwriter told Rolling Stone in 2009.
They (sort of) moved their family to Nashville for Taylor's music career.
In an interview with Philadelphia Magazine in 2008, Taylor said she was considered "weird" in her hometown for her pursuance of music, but after she moved to Nashville, she was able to be a "normal kid."
Taylor was initially inspired to move to the city based on the careers of Shania Twain and LeAnn Rhimes, per Entertainment Weekly, and convinced her parents to take a trip there when she was 11. Shortly after that trip, Taylor learned how to play guitar, and the family relocated to Nashville when she was about 14, only after her father realized he could continue his finance job without issues.
"I never wanted to make that move about her 'making it,"' Andrea told Entertainment Weekly in 2008. "Because what a horrible thing if it hadn't happened, for her to carry that kind of guilt or pressure around."
The family actually moved to Hendersonville, Tennessee, a suburb just outside of Nashville, so Taylor could avoid going to school with "producer's kids" and "label presidents' kids," her mom told EW.
Shortly after the family's move, Taylor became the youngest person to be signed with Sony/ATV publishing.
Andrea Swift was diagnosed with cancer.
In 2015, Taylor announced to her fans in a since-deleted Tumblr post that her mother had been diagnosed with cancer. "This is something my family and I thought you should know about now," the star wrote, per PEOPLE. "I’m saddened to tell you that my mom has been diagnosed with cancer. I’d like to keep the details of her condition and treatment plans private, but she wanted you to know."
Her mom entered remission, however the cancer later returned in 2019. In a personal essay for Elle that year, Taylor wrote that both of her parents had been diagnosed with cancer, and her mother's had returned.
"My mom’s cancer is a real problem," she wrote. "I used to be so anxious about daily ups and downs. I give all of my worry, stress, and prayers to real problems now." Taylor notably penned "Soon You'll Get Better"for her mom, which appeared on her 2019 album Lover.
In early 2020, Taylor's mom was also diagnosed with a brain tumor, which was part of the reason she opted for the (later cancelled) Lover Fest in 2020, rather than a traditional tour, according to Good Morning America.
Andrea appears healthier these days, and is usually present (and interacting with fans) at Taylor's Eras Tour shows.
Taylor's parents are very proud of her career.
ICYDK, Taylor's mom is literally known for saying "That's my baby, and I'm real proud," which was a soundbite clipped from an interview that later went viral online. Taylor's parents are often present at her concerts, as well as award shows (when they honor their baby, of course).
In addition to being proud parents, they also help Taylor a lot with the day-to-day aspects of being a performer. If you've attended the Eras Tour (or seen the movie), you might notice Taylor's bejeweled guitar for the Fearless set. Her parents helped glue each of the individual rhinestones onto that guitar, Taylor disclosed in an Instagram story before the tour began.
Taylor's parents are still married.
The Swifts got married in Texas on February 20, 1988. The "Anti-Hero"singer gave her parent's wedding a shoutout while she performed in Houston in April 2023. "You treat us like Houston is my mom's hometown, which it is," Taylor told the Eras Tour crowd, per PEOPLE. "You treat us like this is where my parents got married, which it is."
And 35 years later, Women's Health has learned they're still married.
Austin Swift is their only son.
Austin Swift is about two years younger than his sister, and was born on March 11, 1992. The star has helped produce some of Taylor's projects, including the "I Bet You Think About Me"music video, and recently attended the New York Jets vs. Chiefs game with his sister in October 2023, per PEOPLE.
While the jury is out on if any Swift members will be at the Chiefs vs. Eagles game, I have my fingers are crossed for a future mixed family affair soon!
