Taylor Swift rang in 2019 dressed as Ariel from The Little Mermaid, and her look is instantly iconic
They say that the way you ring in the New Year sets the tone for the year to come. If that’s true, it appears that Taylor Swift’s 2019 will be filled with friends, drinks, and costume parties. Swift took to Instagram to share pics from her New Year’s Eve celebration, and it looked absoluely epic. She didn’t just throw a New Year’s Eve party—she threw a New Year’s Eve costume party. And she dressed as Ariel from The Little Mermaid.
“Mary Poppins, Audrey, Ariel, Ms. Frizzle, Cinderella, Gwen, Mr. Toad, Avril, Nancy Drew, Posh Spice, Rizzo, Frida Kahlo, Steve Irwin, Dorothy,” Swift captioned the post. “This new year we decided to dress up as our childhood heroes. Sending you all love and hope going into 2019.”

Let’s break down this incredible set of pictures, shall we?
The first pic features Swift and her #squad, which has expanded quite a bit since her Bad Blood days, posing on a staircase. Gigi Hadid dressed as Mary Poppins, Blake Lively dressed as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, Ashley Avignone dressed as a very ’90s-era Gwen Stefani, and Iris Apatow dressed as Cinderella. Plus, Swift’s longtime BFF, Abigail Anderson, made a fantastic Posh Spice. But the real star of the photo is, of course, Swift in all of her mermaid glory. Look at that tail! She’s the perfect Ariel.
The group photo is just the beginning.
Next, Swift shared a solo shot of her eating what we can only assume is a mermaid’s favorite food: pizza. The pic shows off the exquisite detailing on her costume and her adorable crab handbag. The third photo is another group shot (hey, Avril) and then, finally, we reach the fourth photo.
The fourth photo is nothing short of a Renaissance painting. It features Swift and Ryan Reynolds sitting at a crowded table, drinking gin straight from the bottle. The gin just so happens to be Aviation Gin, which Reynolds owns. We don’t know what childhood hero the actor is paying homage to, but he wears a killer suit.
Based on Taylor’s New Year’s Eve pics, it certainly looks like she’s going to be cleaning up bottles on New Year’s Day, as her Reputation lyric suggests. Happy New Year, Tay.
