Taylor Swift's "Lavender Haze" video Easter eggs are as cryptic and yet as obvious to Swifties as ever. In between celebrating that she's finally delivering on her promise for more visuals from Midnights, fans got to work dissecting the clues and references from the opening track's video.

She teased the video with a clip on Jan. 26, 2023, on her Instagram, urging Swifties, "Meet me at midnight ... for the 'Lavender Haze' music video premiere (!!!!!!!!!!!!!)"

The snippet features what appears to be Swift sitting on a bed in the same 1970s decor she employed in other Midnights visuals, surrounded by a growing literal lavender haze billowing up from the floor.

"This was the first video I wrote out of the 3 that have been released, and this one really helped me conceptualize the world and mood of Midnights, like a sultry sleepless 70’s fever dream," Swift tweeted of the video.

"Mastermind"

Perhaps hinting at the next Midnights single, a record sleeve reading "Mastermind," the album's closing track, is one of the first visuals. In the song, she sings about stars aligning, and the cover art here features her and Alwyn's zodiac sign constellations: Sagittarius and Pisces.

Fish

The symbol for Pisces is two fish. That's what Swift sees when she pulls back the weather forecast on her TV. Alwyn is a Pisces. Are you noticing a theme here?

What's more, koi fish may well be a reference to Speak Now, hinting evermore (hehe) at Speak Now (Taylor's Version) on the way.

Another potential meaning? The fishbowl she references in the "Lover" video.

The Weather Forecast

Notice how it's 13 degrees basically everywhere? Yeah, we did too. It's also rainy, perhaps a nod to "Midnight Rain."

Some also interpreted the red 60s as a potential release date clue for Speak Now (Taylor's Version) being 60 days into the year, or March 2, 2023, though that's yet to be confirmed. (Heck, it could also be 60 days from now, 60 days from when it was filmed ... we do. Not. Know. It could also just be a number.)

The Love Interest Onscreen

Additionally, her love interest being the weatherman may be a reference to her song "Karma," in which she sings, "Karma is the guy on the screen coming straight home to me."

Taylor Swift's Love Interest Laith Ashley De La Cruz

Swift's love interest in the video is played by Laith Ashley De La Cruz, a trans model, musician and activist. Swift tweeted that she "absolutely adored" working with the star. De La Cruz previously tweeted about Midnights upon its release.

Taylor Swift Blowing Smoke

Swift blowing smoke rings can obviously be a nod to the fact that "Lavender Haze" is a strain of cannabis, and this is very much a Lewis Carroll Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass caterpillar move. This isn't to say that Swift smokes herself in real life (though she's hinted in her lyrics that one of her muses might).

Swift previously explained that "Lavender Haze," co-written with Zoë Kravitz, Jack Antonoff, Sam Dew, Jahaan Sweet and Sounwave, is about being in love and tuning out the rest of the world.

"I happened upon the phrase 'Lavender Haze' when I was watching Mad Men, and I looked it up because I thought it sounded cool," Swift said in an Instagram video about the song ahead of Midnights' release in October 2022. "And it turns out that it's a common phrase used in the '50s, where they would just describe being in love. If you were in the lavender haze, then that meant that you were in that all-encompassing love glow, and I thought that was really beautiful."

Swift explained that "Lavender Haze" is about being set on "doing whatever it takes to stay" in the love-drunk whirlwind despite the fishbowl that she lives in on a daily basis.

"I think a lot of people have to deal with this now, not just like 'public figures,' because we live in the era of social media. And if the world finds out that you're in love with somebody, they're gonna weigh in on it," she said. "Like my relationship for six years, we've had to dodge weird rumors, tabloid stuff, and we just ignore it. And so this song is sort of about the act of ignoring that stuff to protect the real stuff."
