Taylor Swift Just Released the Tracklist for "Lover" and Fans Have Thoughts

We are days away from a brand-new Taylor Swift album (with a whopping 18 songs, no less) and, naturally, the singer has been blessing fans with surprises left and right. Following the release of her title track “Lover” on Friday, August 16, Taylor gave Swifties yet another gift: the full tracklist to her forthcoming seventh studio album.

Naturally, fans didn’t miss a beat before diving into the titles, ready to dissect every word, syllable, letter — you get the idea. Given Taylor’s affinity for easter eggs, it usually stands to reason that there’s hidden messaging in almost everything the artist does, and eagle-eyed Swifties are always up for a clue-hunting challenge.

As far as Lover goes, there are a few things we already know about the album, which puts Swifties at an advantage when it comes to gathering new information. With the title track clearly hinting at Taylor’s beau Joe Alwyn, it seems as though romance will be a common thread throughout the album. Taylor herself even told Vogue that her seventh album is “a love letter to love, in all of its maddening, passionate, exciting, enchanting, horrific, tragic, wonderful glory.” Now that the tracklist is out in the world, fans are developing even more concrete ideas of what to expect from Lover once it drops on August 23.

Some Swifties have already chosen a favorite song based on the titles alone.

One fan declared “I Forgot That You Existed” as their new stan song, while another decided that the first track, along with “Death By A Thousand Cuts” and “Cruel Summer” will be Taylor’s newfound “holy trinity.”

Other fans are looking ahead to the Joe Alwyn tributes.

Plenty of Swifties agree: it seems logical that “London Boy” would be about Joe, who is British. “I’m already in tears,” one fan exclaimed about the track. Another quipped: “She basically just named a song ‘Joe.’”

Alas, some folks can’t get past that font!

Taylor’s tracklist was written in an all-caps font comprised of tiny white dots in front of colorful, puffy clouds. Not gonna lie, it isn’t the easiest thing in the world to read. “Please donate money for Taylor swift so she can buy a new font,” one person joked on Twitter, with another replying to the singer and asking “What is this font, girl?!” (TBH I’ll ruin my vision for Taylor, it’s my sworn duty as a Swiftie, anything for clues.)

And fans who attended Taylor’s Secret Sessions can (understandably) barely hold it together.

Some lucky Swifties have already heard Lover in its entirety, thanks to Taylor’s traditional private listening parties that she hosts with every album release. While those fans have been sworn to secrecy regarding the details of the songs, it seems as though some are reacting to the newly released tracklist, offering other fans a glimpse as to what we can all expect.

“Please be careful when you are listening to ‘Paper Rings,’ it makes you vulnerable,” one fan warned, while also teasing that “Death By a Thousand Cuts” is a “big, fat bop.” According to another Swiftie, “Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince” features a super-intense bridge and tons of metaphors, and “Cruel Summer” is like “if ‘Out of the Woods’ and ‘Getaway Car’ had a brain child.” OK, I’m gonna need a second here; not sure my heart can handle any of this!

But mostly, fans are rapidly googling “Cornelia Street.”

Perhaps the biggest enigma thus far is the song titled “Cornelia Street.” With Secret Session attendees hinting that it’s a major player to watch out for, and other fans pointing out that its Track 9 status should be significant, there’s no doubt that this song is meaningful to Taylor — and will be just as important to her fans. But..where exactly is Cornelia Street?

The most obvious answer is that Taylor rented a house on Cornelia Street in New York City’s West Village during summer 2016, which is around the time she initially met Joe. There's even a Cornelia Street Café in the West Village, which closed its doors in January 2019.

That said, there’s also a Cornelia Street in London and another in the town where Taylor attended high school. Coincidence? For a Swiftie, there is no such thing.

Of course, we’ll have to wait until Taylor’s full album drops for all of the answers. In the meantime, if you need me, I’ll be playing “Lover” on repeat, preparing to be in my feelings for the foreseeable future.
