The 2023 MTV VMAs were a real meeting of the old and the new. Grandmaster Flash, DMC and LL Cool J all came on stage to celebrate 50 years of hip-hop, while the future of the genre looks secure in the hands of the new generation: Nicki Minaj, Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat and Cardi B all ate up the room in their respective performances.

Elsewhere, Diddy accepted the Global Icon Award and performed a series of throwback hits, as did Shakira while receiving the VMA Vanguard, and New Artist winner Ice Spice referenced pop legends Britney Spears and Madonna in her choice of outfit.

With so many stars under one roof, there were bound to be some stellar memes in the making. And the internet was not disappointed.

First things first, last night was a great night for Taylor Swift. Not only did she sweep the awards categories and take home nine VMAs, including Best Artist, Best Album and Best Video, but the "Anti-Hero" singer also had the time of her life watching the show, and footage of her drinking and dancing in the audience has blown up online.

After years of high-profile relationships, rumored celebrity feuds and record-breaking musical achievements, the sentiment online seems to be that chugging booze from a plastic cup next to Ice Spice and shimmying along to Shakira is the most relatable Swift has been in a very long time. Because who among us has not, at one point or other in our lives, struggled to get a cup out of a holder whilst being a little litty? We know that struggle All Too Well, and whether or not you're a fan of her music, it was a real "she is so me" moment.

Tay-Tay, welcome to your Turnt Era. You are one of us.

Swift was also a part of one of the most memorable moments of the night: when boyband *NSYNC reformed, albeit temporarily, to present her with the Best Pop award. Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Lance Bass, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick all appeared on stage together, further fueling rumors that the boys are getting back together following speculation that Timberlake convinced his bandmates to record a track for his upcoming animated sequel Trolls Band Together, which is—you guessed it—about a boyband reuniting.

We also got rumors of a showdown between Timberlake and rapper Megan Thee Stallion after a video surfaced which appeared to depict the two stars having some kind of confrontation. Whatever the pair were saying to each other was not audible, but they later made a TikTok together, so all is seemingly well on that front. Which is... kind of disappointing, honestly. After all, it's not an awards show until somebody comes to blows.
