Whether you host Thanksgiving or not, there are a ton of moving pieces to get everyone from point A to point B (point B is sitting around a magnificent feast, of course). Chefs of the family—ahem, Ree Drummond—sometimes spend the whole week planning and prepping the Thanksgiving menu. That usually means freezing the pie crust, having the turkey brine done the day before, and buying all the groceries. (Those pumpkin desserts aren't going to make themselves, you know.) Other family members might have long day-of road trips ahead, just so they can arrive on time.
It's only natural that something gets lost in the shuffle! Who hasn't woken up to a few unforeseen snags on the morning of an important holiday? You're bound to find whatever your need at Target, whether you've forgotten a critical ingredient or need a mid-drive pick-me-up. If Target is your usual one-stop shop, though, you'll want to listen up: Target's Thanksgiving hours have changed a bit over the years.
Last-minute holiday shopping is always a gamble, especially after 2020 and 2021. A long list of retailers shifted their holiday hours for the first time on Turkey Day.
So, is Target open on Thanksgiving?
No, Target will not be open on Thanksgiving Day in 2022—and it's not going to be open on Thanksgiving in future years, either.
Last year marked an official shift in the company's Thanksgiving policy. "What started as a temporary measure driven by the pandemic is now our new standard," Target CEO Brian Cornell wrote in a 2021 note to employees. The company explained that it had originally closed its stores "in response to the pandemic and to minimize crowding in its stores."
It's certainly a big change for the retailer: In recent years (excluding 2020), Target would typically open around 5 p.m. local time to kick off Black Friday shopping early. If you're wondering, 'But what about all those holiday deals?!' there's no need to fret. During the same time the schedule changed, Target also rolled out a whole new approach to the holiday shopping season. Now, the company is "spreading out savings over the course of several weeks versus a condensed timeframe, and introducing its enhanced Holiday Price Match Guarantee, signaling to guests that they are getting the best deals no matter when they shop." That sounds like a win-win and less stressful for everyone!
Just because you can't get your hands on this or that ingredient at Target doesn't mean you can't still host a Thanksgiving to remember! (Well, unless the ingredient in question is butter.
