Target's Car Seat Trade-In Event Is Back!

Target stores will bring back the popular car seat trade-in program from April 14, 2024 to April 27, 2024.
Participants can earn 20% discounts on a new car seat or other select baby gear.
Parents have until May 11 to apply the discount.
One annoying thing about children: They keep getting bigger. And that means the gear that goes with them — car seats, clothing, strollers — has to keep getting bigger, too.
Target is looking to help ease the burden on parents, while doing a little good for Mother Earth, too. The chain has announced the return of its popular car-seat trade in program, which will take place this year from April 14, 2024 to April 27, 2024.
How it works: Parents who have an expired car seat, old, outgrown or even damaged car seat can bring it into any Target store to be recycled. There, they'll get a Target Circle Bonus for 20% off a new car seat, stroller or other select baby gear. They'll find the bonus either through the Target app, or through a Target account online. The discount can be used either in person or online, and participants have until May 11 to redeem their discount. (And every little bit helps, right?)
Target says that, since the inception of the program in 2016, it's recycled more than 39.6 million pounds of car seat materials. Saving the Earth and getting some cash back on the side? That's a definition of a win-win.
What to Look for When Buying a New Car Seat
If you don't know how to spend that sweet Target discount, here are some things to keep in mind.
Age and stage of the child. Kids under the age of 2 should be in a rear-facing infant seat. Kids older than 2 can be in a forward-facing car seat, and big kids — depending on their height and weight— can transition into a booster seat, either with a high back and headrest (for smaller big kids) or a backless one (for older big kids). You can check The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for recommendations about which seat is right for your child.
Height and weight of the child. Each car seat clearly offers height and weight limits. As soon as a child outgrows either the height or the weight, it's time to move up to the next size.
Convertible features. Some car seats are designed to grow with a child and transform from rear-facing to forward-facing to booster. These may cost more upfront, but could save money in the long run.
Recalls. You can check the Consumer Products Safety Commission to see if any seat has any outstanding recall notices. Once you buy a new one, you should register it with the brand so you can be informed of any future recalls.
One last thing to keep in mind: The American Academy of Pediatrics warns to stay away from used or hand-me-down car seats, since it's hard to know their history and they may be missing parts. All the more reason to try scoring a new one at a discount.
