Target Is Selling a $40 'Comfortable' Athleisure Dress Similar to Lululemon and Athleta, and Shoppers Say It's the 'Perfect Fit'

You know those days when you want something comfortable to quickly throw on but you don’t want to look like you just walked out of bed? When you don’t want to wear leggings or sweatpants because you want to look a little more put together, but you don’t want to be in something “nice”? Those times are great for workout skirts (or skorts) and activewear dresses. While some brands call them tennis dresses or workout dresses, they all serve the same purpose: giving you a cute outfit you can move around in even if you’re just doing errands. And Target’s new active dress is similar to versions from Lululemon, Athleta and even Abercrombie & Fitch.
Target’s new Women's Corset Detail Active Dress by their athleisure brand JoyLab is a very cute staple to add to your closet this spring. Like other active dresses or workout dresses, this one has stretchy and sweat-wicking material. Specifically, it has a “soft, stretchy interlock fabric” made of 78% nylon and 22% spandex. It is a skort with built-in shorts—with pockets!!—and it has a U-shaped neckline with thin spaghetti straps.

Women's Corset Detail Active Dress - JoyLab, $40 at Target
The active dress comes in three colors—black, green and white—and a range of sizes from XS to XXL. Its most notable feature is, of course, its corset detail as the name suggests. This means that there are seams underneath the bust, at the waist and two connecting them in front. It doesn’t have a corset “feature” that makes the dress super tight to hold you in, but instead just gives the illusion to that style of bodice with the stitching details.
Popular shopping Instagram account, @shesattarget, posted about the dresses at her local Target on March 9 and wrote that the low back, built-in shorts and corset detailing were faves of hers. And reviewers agree; one wrote that after searching for the perfect active dress, this one is comfortable and allows for less sweaty outdoor activities. “Love it and perfect fit!" they wrote.
Workout and active dresses are nothing new and come from tennis dress styles. Because of that, this Target Corset Detail Active Dress looks like similar dresses on the market. For example, it’s pretty similar to Lululemon’s Align Dress and Athleta’s Santorini Thera Dress. The latter doesn’t have the corset detailing and has thicker straps, but it is made from lightweight sporty material and could easily be for brunch or a tennis match (like Target’s).

One popular brand that does have a corset-style activewear dress is Abercrombie & Fitch with their YPB sculptLUX High-Neck Corset Mini Dress (starting at $48). Along with built-in shorts with pockets and the corset seam details, it’s made with a stretchy, light material that’s 78% polyester and 22% elastane (which is pretty similar to Target’s).

Lastly, a more affordable lookalike to the Target Corset Active Dress is Old Navy’s PowerSoft Sleeveless Dress. It has thicker straps than Target’s and it doesn’t have a corset style, but it’s made from great material to workout in. It also has built-in shorts with pockets.

As Target writes on their site, their Corset Detail Active Dress is perfect for sports, errands and even brunch with how you can easily dress it up. So if you’ve been looking for the perfect on-the-go dress, this one might be for you. And if you're looking for more options, Lululemon, Athleta, Abercrombie & Fitch and Old Navy are a handful of other retailers that offer trendy styles.
