Taos Ski Valley Reveals Brand New Trails

Earlier this month, November 2nd, Taos Ski Valley, New Mexico, shared exciting news on Facebook: the resort was unveiling three new ski trails.

The trails, named Dadou's, Ponsse Scheme, and Cache Stash, were created as part of Taos Ski Valley's ongoing forest health initiatives.

The aforementioned forest health initiatives involve prescribed burns of wood and undergrowth piles on Taos' piste. With the detritus gone, the resort has expanded its terrain offerings by cutting new runs.

Here's where the new runs appear on Taos' trail map.

Two of the runs, Dadou's and Ponsse Scheme, have interesting backstories.

Dadou's is named for Bernard "Dadou" Mayer, a beloved ski instructor at Taos and founder of the original Hotel Edelweiss. Mayer, who immigrated to the United States from the French Alps, was a fixture at Taos for 50+ years before passing in 2022.

Ponsse Scheme, in contrast, isn't named after a person. Instead, it's a clever play on words, combining the term "Ponzi scheme" with the name of the harvester Taos used to clear dead trees in the area after a snow squall: a Ponsse.

Taos plans to kick off the ski season on November 23rd.
