Tanya Taylor Pre-Fall 2024
“I got super into styling as always,” Tanya Taylor said during a walk-through at her New York City showroom. While many designers use stylists to help tell their seasonal message, Taylor does it herself, bringing to life her work known for its unexpected pairing and color stories. “I wanted to think of how we bring all these different fabrications together and play with this like sporty kind of feminine volume,” she explained of her pre-fall offering.
Her first look: an oversize menswear-style shirt in blue pinstripe with exaggerated cuff styled with a citrus orange sequin skirt with hints of the same pinstripe peaking out at the hem, an invigorating mix of textures, color and shape. Lightness of what is a very long period on the retail floor came though in her fabrics — airy, breathable cotton poplins and silks. Blazers were unlined, so light they could be worn alone. Crochet knits, like a maxi short-sleeve dress in a squiggly color story or oxford shirting with lace overlays, and striped vests with matching wide-leg pants, were easy ideas for the warm months that still had urban polish. Denim was renewed with new summer shapes: a tunic, a vest or a maxidress with a slit at the front that had a vintage appeal.

Taylor doesn’t only style her work, in fact she had just spent a shift at her new Upper East Side store in the trenches with her retail staff helping to tell her brand story. “It’s the best experience,” she said of a day of dressing and helping customers on one of her new stores’ busiest weekends to date. “I can come into work fully understanding what every single customer wanted as I think of what is ahead.”
