Tanner Fletcher's Fall 2024 Takes Estate Sale Treasures and Makes Them 'Wearable'

Finding a treasure in the bins of a thrift store or in the dusty corner of an estate sale can feel like magic — especially when you're able to put something so precious to use. For its Fall 2024 collection, Tanner Fletcher aims to recreate that exhilarating sensation.

"We were doing a lot of vintage shopping and sourcing, so, we were like, 'Oh, estate sale,'" Fletcher Kasell, one half of the design duo, told Fashionista.

Home decor has always played a large role in the Tanner Fletcher universe: Tanner Richie's background is in staging for real estate, and he said in a 2023 interview that he "was always tweaking and fixing things [around the house]... Neither of us studied actual fashion design, so we get inspired and learn techniques at the thrift stores and through vintage pieces."

Though they're designing ready-to-wear, Richie and Kasell's love of vintage (particularly from the late '50s through '70s) stays within the realm of furniture. "We get a lot of [our DNA] from interior design inspiration — drapery and skirted furniture, skirted sofas and fringe lampshades," said Kasell.

Fall 2024 features lots of ruffles and bows, two decorative elements very popular in fashion right now but that have been a part of the Tanner Fletcher brand since the beginning. It's not about following trends — it's simply convenient for its business that these flairs happen booming right now.

"We've been doing bows before it was super popular, and it just so happens to be trendy right now, which is a good thing and annoying at the same time," Richie said. As much as the duo has become known for their bow-centric designs, Richie feels that "if anything, we should be known more for our ruffles — it's a way to give a lot of masculine silhouettes a little bit more of a feminine edge without it being over the top."

A core part of the brand's mission has been to merge feminine and masculine energies to create a boundless world of self-expression. Most famously, that's translated to taking the stereotypically-gendered suit or gown and making it aesthetically accessible to whoever wants to wear it. As much as the audience loves these pieces from a design perspective, though, they aren't always the most wearable — or affordable.

"We have a lot of Gen Z and aspirational customers who want to buy into the brand, but there's only so much we can do on the pricing because our quantities and the fact that we make mostly everything in New York," Richie said. "Our average customer buys a shirt and a vintage book or something from our curated Home section."

With this in mind, Richie and Kasell are using Fall 2024 to build out the brand's more accessible offering with basics and other pieces that are more versatile (and perhaps, then, more appealing for an investment).

"We're building our core," Kasell said, noting that there are 42 looks in the collection — more than the brand usually puts out. "It's very wearable this season. We really wanted to establish more pieces that can be mixed and matched and worn on anyone."

"If you ask yourself, 'What am I going to wear today?,' you should be able to (build an outfit) with all of this right here," Richie added.
