Tan France’s Tricks for Looking Chic When It’s Humid Will Save You This Summer

Humidity, ick. It’s pretty much the bain of every summer-loving person’s existence. Right when you feel pulled together and ready to face the day, it hits: You go from cool to sweaty in seconds. No fun.

Leave it to Queer Eye’s resident fashion guru, Tan France, to have a work-around for situations when you find yourself in these less-than-desirable temps. PureWow had the chance to chat with France exclusively while he was in town to promote his partnership with Men’s Wearhouse and its annual Suit Drive, going on now through July 31. As part of this initiative, France is encouraging men and women to donate their gently worn professional attire at more than 700 participating Men’s Wearhouse locations to help unemployed men and women who are re-entering the workforce. (A noble cause!)

In fact, France's humidity tactics were picked up while he was on the job. “We’re shooting season five of Queer Eye right now, and it’s usually around 85 percent humidity, so it’s disgusting," he admitted. His main strategy for keeping cool was to wear light, breathable layers.

France continues: “I’ll wear cottons or silks or linens so I keep my look very simple, but also relatively classic. This is not the time to go for something super creative. Instead, I’m all about a high-waisted trouser or simple button-up shirt that’s made in a muslin. Basically, anything lightweight that’s going to give me a breeze.”

The next step in France’s two-part strategy? Selecting the right colors. “If you go for a bright color in the humidity, you’re going to be patchy.” In other words, sweat spots are a lot more visible on vibrant hues. Instead, France has a humidity-specific color palette: “I go for light tones.”

BRB, humidity-proofing our wardrobe.
