He made his way into the hearts of viewers as one of the Fab Five in Netflix's Queer Eye, but Tan France has had some dark times in his life too. In his new book Naturally Tan: A Memoir, France reveals that he has struggled with depression in the past, and once it got so bad he almost considered attempting suicide.

"The truth is, I was starting to feel depressed, which I had never felt before. I had been blue, but this was different," he says in the book. Before his success with Queer Eye, France was busy working three jobs, which took a toll on his mental health, to the point that one night he found himself calling his husband Rob to share how he was feeling.

"I want to drive off this bridge, and I need you to talk me out of it," he recalls saying, in an extract from the book shared with RadarOnline. Rob was able to talk him down, and he subsequently recognized that he was under far too much pressure and needed to take better care of himself.

Since then, France has become a household name thanks to his role as fashion advisor on Queer Eye, which is a bona fide global sensation. And in addition to making "French tuck" a part of our everyday lexicon, it's clear that France's own experiences have helped inform the way he talks to makeover subjects about self care and self love.

Naturally Tan: A Memoir will be published on June 4.
