Tallahassee is experiencing the expansion of one chain and the introduction of another: One specializes in butter burgers, while the other is bringing the heat with its Nashville-style hot chicken sandwiches.

Culver's, the Wisconsin-based fast-food chain, is opening its second Tallahassee location at 1311 Executive Center Drive, according to the chain's website. It's just off Apalachee Parkway on the site of the old Koger Center.

The other chain coming to Tallahassee is newer to the food scene.

Hangry Joe's Hot Chicken and Wings, founded in 2022, is slated to open several Sunshine State locations, including Orlando, Tampa and Jacksonville, with one proposed for the capital.

Culver's already has one Tallahassee location at 2439 N. Monroe St. The second is in an area bustling with fast-food chains including Whataburger, Zaxby's, KFC, Guthrie's, Slim Chickens, Panera Bread and the long-awaited Del Taco.

Outside of its popular "butterburgers" and frozen custard, the chain offers chicken tenders, sandwiches and fried seafood delights served sandwich or platter style.

Excitement for the newest location has already circulated on Facebook, where one user commented: "Great!! We don't have to drive that far anymore!!"

Hangry Joe's is joining the flock of chicken restaurants in the city. You may recognize the fast-food chain's founder, Derek Cha, at his other venture, Sweet Frog Frozen Yogurt, at 3439 Bannerman Road.

Hangry Joe's menu features its specialty Nashville-style chicken sandwiches marinated in a spicy cayenne pepper-based sauce then fried until crisp. It is offered in plain, mild, medium, hot and angry hot flavors, starting at $10.75. The angry hot flavor requires a waiver signature.

Outside of sandwiches, the chain also offers a "chicken waffle" entrée, along with wraps, fingers, loaded fries and salads. They also have a generous range of sides including waffle fries, fried okra, cider slaw and mac and cheese.
