We Need to Talk About Lady Gaga’s 2023 Oscars Performance Right Now Because Wow

If you recently heard a collective sigh of relief, it’s because pretty much everyone’s night was made when Lady Gaga made a surprise appearance at the 2023 Oscars and performed her hit song “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick, which was truly magical. With a bare face, Gaga kept things super simple in a plain black T-shirt, black ripped jeans, and sneakers while belting the super-moving lyrics.

The performance look was such a deviation from her straight-off-the-runway Versace gown first worn by Gigi Hadid that she wore on the Oscars red carpet.

“Hold My Hand” is up for Best Original Song this year, and nearly all of the nominees in the category performed tonight—the final performance will be from Rihanna for “Lift Me Up.” Four years ago, Lady Gaga won her very first Oscar in this same category, so here’s to seeing if she has a sweet full-circle moment tonight!

Originally, Lady Gaga was planning to skip the show due to filming for Joker: Folie à Deux conflicting with the Oscars. Oscars executive producer and showrunner Glenn Weiss confirmed to Variety that Gaga wouldn’t attend just four days ago. “We have a great relationship with Lady Gaga and her camp. She is in the middle of shooting a movie right now,” he said. “It didn’t feel like she can get a performance to the caliber that we’re used to with her and that she is used to. So she is not going to perform on the show.” Glad to see things turned around so quickly!
