Nearly a year since Carrie Ann Inaba decided to take a step back from The Talk, the 54-year-old TV personality is reflecting on what less airtime has done for her.

As viewers of the CBS daytime talk show may know, Carrie Ann joined The Talk cast in the fall of 2019 as the moderator, following in the steps of Big Brother host Julie Chen. In the spring of 2021, cohost Sheryl Underwood shared that Carrie Ann was taking a leave of absence to focus on her wellbeing. While her moderator chair was empty on The Talk, fans turned to her Instagram to keep up with her “healing” journey.

For the next several months, the former professional dancer revealed that she was trying different treatments although she didn’t specify what they were for. In years prior, she had been open about her multiple autoimmune diseases and health issues, like lupus, Sjögren’s syndrome and fibromyalgia. Now, Carrie Ann is sharing how she's been doing since saying goodbye to her Talk cohosts last summer.

Speaking with Yahoo! Life, she divulged that she first began experiencing chronic pain while filming as a judge on Dancing With the Stars season 4 in 2007. At the time, Carrie Ann had to come to terms with the fact that her body and identity were changing. She confessed that she “felt a lot of shame” for looking presentable but dealing with a different reality behind the scenes. Since departing The Talk in August 2021, Carrie Ann has become even more in tune with herself. She shared that she’s currently undergoing treatment for Lyme disease, which is associated with symptoms like headaches and fatigue.

“After leaving The Talk, I really took some time to focus on my health and understand what that meant,” she told the outlet. “I could have framed it in a way in my mind as a memory of my body disappointed me. But my body didn't disappoint me, my body actually woke me up. I think what I was doing before, that is, I was putting Band-Aids over things, I was managing symptoms. I wasn't seeking health."

Upon hearing more about the TV personality’s personal journey with autoimmune diseases, which she refers to as “invisible illness,” fans rushed to her Instagram comments section with heartfelt messages about feeling seen and heard.

“Keep on inspiring and lifting others and showing them that just because you have a chronic illness, doesn’t stop you from thriving and being a positive vessel to tell your story to inspire and help others. ❤️🥂,” one person wrote. “Thank you so much for sharing your story and bringing awareness for others who are dealing with this. Wishing you good health and pain free days. 💝,” another added.

Despite still dealing with a variety of diagnoses, Carrie is feeling better these days and she continues checking in on herself. “I’m more well now than I’ve been in my life even maybe when I was in my 20s,” she told the publication. “I’m so much more conscious now of what it takes to maintain wellness. It’s a daily practice every day I have to work on me ‘cause this is the gift.”
