Tahoe Ski Resort Launching New Recreational Race League

Have you ever found yourself thinking, "I didn't try hard enough in high school (or college, or whatever) but now I'm dialed. I'm focused. I'm ready to race." Too personal? No. Because, if you live in Tahoe, your time to shine is now.

"Registration is now open for the Friday Nite Gates race series at Mt. Rose!"

"As part of our "SKI" G.I.F. Fridays, we will be open late until 6 pm. Beginning in March, we are introducing Tahoe's newest recreational race league."

SKI G.I.F. Fridays is Mt. Rose's program for discounted tickets after 12pm.

The race leagues, being recreational, have unique rules for the team makeup. "Each 4-8 person team must have at least one snowboarder and one woman athlete competing at each Friday nite race."

As a female former ski racer (not a very good one, ever, but I deserve credit where credit is due), I'm a little offended being a woman is equivalent to being a snowboarder, but I'll leave that fight for justice for another day.

Mt. Rose also requires that "all Athletes must be 18 years or older and have a valid lift ticket or season pass for race day."

"Six races will be held on the right side of KC Bowl from 2:30 to 4:30 pm. Teams will designate four racers for each race, 2 runs each, with the top combined score to be thrown out. Points will be awarded and compiled, and the results will be updated on the website on Saturday morning."

"This recreational race series competes on a loose slalom course on KC Bowl. Themed team names and optional costumes are encouraged!"

The first race is on March 1st, with the orientation party on February 23rd.

Now, hear me out. This season has been hard and fast. Pow days are few and far between. Mt. Rose often gets great snow. But that's besides the point: what's fun when conditions are bad?

Race courses.

They don't need snow (in fact, they don't want snow) and you can get the same type of rush as hucking something from that timed descent. There's a thrill in keeping your line high to ride out the ruts near the gates.

Plus, and don't hate me: it helps your technique, which helps with freeriding and pretty much every other aspect of skiing. No one wants to hear it, but it's the truth.

Oh yeah, and there's the fame and glory if you or your team wins!

"The coveted FNG Cup will be awarded April 12 – Lakeview Deck 4:30 pm."

You can sign up today, and there is limited space, so don't wait if you want to show everyone your gate-bashing skills.

I knew I packed those pole guards for something.
