Tahoe Pro Straight Lines "The Chimney" Over And Over Again
Palisades Tahoe, California, is a freeride skiing mecca, home to acres and acres of committing big mountain terrain.
Amongst these test pieces is a zone called "The Chimney," where a Rolodex of make-it-or-break-it lines awaits. Here, local skiers earn their stripes.
This week, skier Andy Hays released a compendium of his "Chimney" descents on Instagram. He offers a visual essay that exemplifies why this zone, in his words, is "one of the great amphitheaters in skiing."

If, like me, you obsessively consume skiing content, you know of the old GoPro optical illusion -- for whatever reason, POV video angles tend to downplay the gnarliness of the skiing they've captured. Therefore, it could be easy to watch Hays' skiing in "The Chimney" and assume that it's not that committing.

I'm here to tell you to throw that gut reaction out the window. Most of the skiing in "The Chimney" is incredibly gnarly, involving short, high-speed runs where an error can send you on an unpleasant trip to the washing machine.
That reputation is what makes "The Chimney" and similar zones across Palisades Tahoe so special. Few resorts throughout North America pack in so many historic lines per square acre, with easy lift access to boot.
In short, if you've got the big mountain skiing bug, Palisades Tahoe is the place to be. Just don't forget the back protector at home.
